Chapter 5

642 Words
Kenneth made no effort to hide his presence. The crushing pressure he carried had once been enough to make his enemies buckle at the knees and collapse. Yet Yvonne showed not the slightest fear. She held his gaze directly, and the two of them locked into a silent battle of wills. Then Tim's voice rang out from the doorway. "Yvonne, where are you? Get out here this instant!" At that, Kenneth let out a mocking snort. "Seems even your father isn't on your side. You should start preparing for your next engagement." With that, Kenneth exited through another door at the back. Yvonne felt a brief sting of disappointment. It looked like Kenneth had no intention of calling off the engagement. She would need another plan. Soon after, Tim arrived backstage and found her. The engagement had fallen apart and turned into a public humiliation. Tim lost his temper completely. "You can't even hold onto a man, what use are you?" Yvonne stayed composed. "I have my own value in life, but chasing men is not one of them." "What value do you even have? Go to the hospital right now and bring Simon back. If he doesn't return, don't bother coming home!" "Did you all not see the video today? Simon cheated, it's right there in black and white. And you still expect me to marry him?" Tim laughed as if he had heard the funniest thing. "Listen to me, there's no man in this world who doesn't cheat. As long as you become Mrs. Brown, you'll have endless wealth and luxury. Who cares what Simon does outside? "He is the heir of the Brown family. Everything the Brown family owns will end up in his hands. That is a blessing most women could only dream of. "If you hadn't been lucky enough to be engaged to Simon since childhood, do you really think something this good would ever land in your lap?" Yvonne curled her lips, lowering her gaze to conceal the sarcasm in her eyes. As expected, there were no good men in this world. Tim was no exception, and neither was Simon. Yvonne didn't go to the hospital. Instead, she went to see Simon's father, Charlie. She put on a heartbroken expression and said to Charlie, "The Stewart family and the Brown family have been close for years. I've always thought of Simon as a close partner, but after what happened today, it's clear he and Vera truly love each other. So our engagement..." So could it just be called off then? Charlie appeared mild and composed on the surface, yet an unmistakable pressure lingered around him. "Yvonne, today's incident is Simon's fault. You don't need to worry, I'll make sure he learns his lesson. I'll choose another suitable date for your wedding later. As for things like true love, don't mention them again." A natural, matter-of-fact smile settled on Charlie's face. "Families like ours care about legacy, about marriage alliances that strengthen business ties, about whether the money in the vault keeps growing, about whether stock prices go up or down. The only thing we do not care about is love. Do you understand what I mean?" Of course Yvonne understood. She had been raised in exactly this kind of world. Everyone was ruthlessly practical. What she had said earlier about Simon and Vera being true love had only been a probe to see if that excuse could be used to call off the engagement. Now Charlie's words felt like a heavy weight pressing on her chest. She finally saw the cold, profit driven nature behind this marriage alliance, yet at the same time, another question only grew harder for her to grasp. With the Brown family's standing in Lorvanna City, they could have chosen any woman they wanted, so why had they chosen her in particular?
