Chapter 1

"I spent the night with your fiancé. So what if you marry him with your family name? Remember, the one not loved is always the other woman!" Yvonne's friend Nina Stone's triumphant voice still echoed in her ears. Her fiancé, Simon Brown, cheated on her the night before their engagement, trying to make her the laughingstock of the city. Fine. She'd smash this arranged marriage to pieces with her own hands. And the "ace in the hole" she'd carefully picked out? He was sleeping right beside her. In the private suite of the club, Yvonne gritted her teeth against the ache in her body, jumped out of bed, and dressed in one swift motion. She glanced back at the man waking up on the other side of the bed. It was Kenneth Brown. A self-made billionaire who had risen to power in recent years. Once the bastard child the Browns had abused and humiliated, he now held real control. He was a forbidden figure even the Brown family didn't dare cross. And also... Yvonne's scumbag fiancé's uncle. "Leaving already?" Kenneth propped himself up, his low, gravelly voice dripping with danger. His face looked like it had been carved by the gods, but his eyes were cold as ice. Yvonne pretended not to know him. She pulled a stack of bills from her wallet and placed it on the nightstand. "Great service last night. But I'm in a hurry. Got an engagement to get to. Don't worry, I'll call you next time. Bye!" Did she just... treat him like a gigolo? As the door slammed shut behind her, Kenneth lifted a brow. His blue eyes stayed as cold as ever. After texting his secretary, Zayn Lynn, Kenneth got out of bed and headed for the shower. When he walked out of the bathroom, Zayn was already waiting with a clean suit. "Mr. Brown, Simon and Yvonne Stewart's engagement party is about to start. Should we leave now?" "Yes." "Your friend asked why you missed last night's gathering. Would you like me to respond?" "No." Kenneth had arrived in Lorvanna City the previous night, and his longtime friend, Sean Green, had dragged him straight to a private club. There, a young woman who had too much to drink wrapped herself around him, and they ended up spending the night together. He had always possessed remarkable self discipline, yet the woman from the night before carried a unique fragrance that eased his guard for the first time in years. For someone who suffered from insomnia, a full night's sleep was a rare luxury. That was why he had overlooked her rude behavior and bold offense. Yvonne flagged down a taxi on the street and gave the driver the hotel's name. By the time she reached the engagement venue, it was nearly eleven, and plenty of guests had already gathered inside the banquet hall. The moment Yvonne stepped into the dressing room, before she could see who was inside, a hand swung toward her face. She caught the woman's wrist before the slap could land. "I'm getting engaged later. Are you sure I can even do my makeup with a swollen face?" Yvonne shot a frosty look at the man who had tried to strike her. That man was her father, Tim Stewart. Tim was already seething from the missed slap, and now he snapped. "You ran off and ignored my calls. If anything messes up this engagement today, you won't get away with it!" The Brown family was the most powerful clan in Lorvanna City. For Tim, tying the knot with them was like winning the lottery. Even more, the Brown family had Kenneth, who lived in Crown City and stood as one of the most influential figures in the entire country. He had heard Kenneth would attend the engagement banquet today. Both families had been preparing for days, yet as the ceremony loomed, neither the bride nor the groom had appeared. Yvonne met Tim's gaze with ice in her eyes. "You're only shouting at me. Has Simon even shown up?" Tim clenched his jaw. Yvonne gave a sharp, mocking laugh, "If Simon isn't here, am I supposed to get engaged alone?" Tim's expression turned grim. "The Brown family is already searching for him. Go change and do your makeup." The makeup artist quickly stepped in and tried to guide Yvonne away, but Yvonne knew there was no way out of this engagement. She told the makeup artist, "I'll handle it myself." Her mother had once told her that being too beautiful could invite disaster. Since childhood, Yvonne had used makeup to dull her appearance on purpose. If the makeup artist touched her face, the secret she had been guarding might be revealed. Suddenly, chaos erupted at the doorway. "Hurry! Kenneth is here!" At that name, Tim hurriedly dragged Yvonne outside. "Simon's uncle is here. Watch your manners!" Yvonne certainly knew who Kenneth was. More than that, she knew he was an illegitimate son of the Brown family. Cast out when he was young, he had somehow risen to become someone the Brown family now couldn't afford to cross. That was exactly why Yvonne intended to use him to bring this absurd engagement to an end.
