Yvonne stepped out with Tim and immediately spotted Kenneth surrounded by a crowd. Under the sunlight, his nearly 6'3" figure towered above the rest, a faint trace of impatience etched across his strikingly attractive features.
Yvonne didn't force her way forward. She simply stood at a distance, observing him. Unlike the untamed intensity from last night, he now wore a perfectly tailored suit, his hair neatly set, like an untouchable king.
The silver cross bracelet on his wrist stood out in particular, giving him a cold, almost ascetic aura. As if sensing her stare, he slightly frowned and turned his gaze in her direction.
Their eyes met for barely a second, but his look was sharp enough to feel like it could pierce right through her. Yvonne knew he had already recognized her, so she quickly melted back into the crowd.
"Kenneth, it has been so long. You must stay in Lorvanna City a little longer this time." Charlie Brown greeted him with full respect. He was the current head of the Brown family and Simon's father.
Kenneth only gave a cold response before being escorted into the VIP room. The Stewart family was eager to follow, and Tim trailed in at the very back.
"When will the wedding begin?" Kenneth glanced at his wristwatch.
Charlie wiped the sweat from his forehead. "I'm afraid we'll need to wait a bit longer."
"Wait for what?" Kenneth's words were few, but each one carried weight, like a hammer striking Charlie's chest.
"For Simon." A clear female voice rang out. "He doesn't want to marry me, so he ran away from the engagement."
Kenneth turned his gaze toward Yvonne in the crowd. Her looks were nothing striking, plain and ordinary. Yet when she spoke, she carried a presence that was impossible to ignore.
Strictly speaking, this engagement had been set up between the two families since they were children, but the final word came from Kenneth himself. So Simon running off on the wedding day was basically a public humiliation aimed straight at Kenneth.
Charlie rushed to defuse the situation. "No, that's not true. Simon just had something urgent come up, he'll be here any minute."
Yvonne watched everything unfold with a chilling calm. "You still haven't found him, have you? Or do you want me to give you an address?"
She casually named an apartment. It was Vera's place. Charlie's expression froze at once, and he quickly sent people to bring Simon back. Not long after, Simon showed up in front of everyone looking disheveled and exhausted from overindulgence.
"You brat! Go change your clothes. The engagement is still on!"
"Dad, I already said I won't marry Yvonne. She's so ugly it makes me want to throw up. If my friends knew I married someone like her, they'd never let me live it down." Simon shot Yvonne a look full of disgust.
"Get Simon changed and bring him back in. This wedding is happening whether he likes it or not!" No matter how much Simon resisted, Charlie had already made his decision.
Yvonne was also taken away to change. In the dressing room, when she tried to zip up her gown, the zipper got stuck. No matter how hard she tugged, it would not budge.
Then the door opened. Yvonne did not even check who came in. She simply stepped closer, pulled her hair aside, exposing her pale neck. "Can you zip it up for me?"
A large hand pressed against her back, and with one steady pull, the stuck zipper moved up.
"Thanks." Yvonne said as she turned around, only to find Kenneth standing behind her. "How did you get in here?"
"Take a guess." Kenneth stepped closer. His presence was so overpowering it felt hard to breathe.
He grabbed her throat. His sharp gaze seemed to strip everything bare. "You've got guts. You actually tried to play me."
So he had seen through it. Yvonne had never underestimated Kenneth. A man who had climbed to the top of power on his own was never an easy target. Her little scheme was nothing in front of him. Still, she had never planned to fool him forever. As long as she could push him far enough to cancel the engagement in anger, that was all she needed.
Kenneth looked at her neck. It was slender and fragile, as if a little more pressure could break it. Yet strangely, the woman in front of him stayed completely calm, as if she had no fear of him at all.
"Don't be absurd. How could I possibly be scheming against you? I only just learned you're Simon's uncle."
Kenneth noticed that Yvonne's face was nothing special, rather ordinary, but her eyes were unusually vivid. Just moments ago, she had lied straight to his face, and the slyness in her gaze was impossible to conceal.
"People who lie to me never end up well." Kenneth tightened his grip.
Yvonne found it harder to breathe, but she still refused to admit anything. "Simon can run around with other women. Why should I stay loyal for him? He had just left another woman's bed before coming to this engagement today."
Her faintly aggrieved tone made Kenneth loosen his hold slightly. Simon's reputation was no secret. Men like him always played the field. Kenneth also knew last night had been Yvonne's first time.
"I don't care what you believe. The marriage between you and Simon won't be canceled."
Yvonne blinked and suddenly smiled. "Then why are you here looking for me? Still not satisfied from last night?"
In that instant, Kenneth was pulled back to the heated scenes from the night before, along with the strange fragrance on Yvonne's body. Even now, that scent seemed to linger in the surrounding air.
But Kenneth never let anyone push him around. "Shut up. I hope you know what you should say and what you shouldn't. Otherwise..."
He did not finish, but the intent of killing was already clear.
Yvonne quickly set her position. "Wasn't that our first time meeting just now? I don't understand what you mean."
Kenneth looked at her coldly. "Good. Just remember that."
He released her throat and strode toward the dressing room door, ready to leave.
Before his hand could reach the handle, a voice came from outside. "Yvonne, are you in there?"
