Vivian walked toward me in her heels.
"Chloe, give me the baby." She extended both hands, her fingertips almost touching Ivy's blanket. "Stop putting her through this."
That cloying, pungent sweetness hit me right in the face.
"Go left..." Ivy's voice was barely a thread in my mind. "Air..."
I jerked my head to the side. Ten steps to my left, the glass door to the terrace wasn't fully closed. The heavy velvet curtain swayed gently with the breeze leaking through the gap.
I ignored Vivian's reaching hands. I tightened my arms around the baby, shoved the tall round table out of my way, and charged left.
"Stop her!" Dr. Harris shouted, pointing at me.
Several guards converged from both sides.
I ran for the terrace with everything I had. Just as I was about to reach the glass door, Vivian cut in from the side.
"Don't hurt the baby!" she cried out, planting herself in front of me. One hand shoved hard against my back.
The force knocked me completely off balance.
As I fell, I arched my back and tightened my arms, shielding Ivy against my chest.
Bam!
My knee and right elbow slammed into the marble floor. Searing pain shot up through my bones. But I didn't stop. Carried forward by the momentum, I crashed straight into the partially open terrace door.
The frame let out a harsh grinding sound.
The heavy door forced open—a half-meter gap.
Cold night air rushed over my head and poured in, cutting straight through the blanket in my arms.
I knelt on the ground, gasping, and looked down at Ivy.
Footsteps closed in behind me. The shadows of two guards loomed over me.
