Chapter Two

Inside the heavy doors of the office, the suffocating heat of the room had soured into a freezing, heavy silence. Clara sat directly on the plush carpet, her back pressed against the hard mahogany base of the desk that only minutes ago had been the stage for her undoing. Her knees were pulled tightly to her chest, her arms wrapping around herself as she clutched her rumpled clothes against her skin like a shield. Waves of burning, visceral shame washed over her in relentless crests, making her skin hot and her throat tight. She bent her head, burying her face in the dark fabric of her dress, wishing the floor would simply open up and swallow her whole. The sharp, metallic scent of Ryan’s cologne mixed with her own perfume still hung thick in the air, a suffocating reminder of what they had done. They had tried to stop. God knew they had tried. It had all begun about 12years ago when Clara’s mother married into the family, officially introducing her to Ryan as his new step-sister. From the very first family dinner, the air between them had been charged with an unspoken, dangerous tension. She had developed an instant, consuming crush on him, captivated by his sharp mind, his effortless authority, and the quiet intensity he carried. Slowly, agonizingly, that innocent infatuation had mutated. Ryan began looking at her differently, his gaze lingering a second too long at family gatherings, his voice dropping an octave whenever they were left alone in a room. The dam had finally broken on a rainy weekend when the rest of the family was out of town. A shared bottle of wine, a lingering touch on the kitchen counter, and the fragile boundaries of their new sibling dynamic shattered completely. They had made out with a desperate, reckless hunger that frightened them both. From that night on, it became an addiction, a dark, unspoken dependency they couldn't break, no matter how many times they promised themselves it would be the last time. But today had been born out of a different kind of desperation. Only hours earlier, Clara had been at her boyfriend’s house, standing in his living room as he coldly and systematically ended their relationship. Heartbroken, humiliated, and feeling utterly discarded, she had driven straight to Hart’s Corporation, seeking the only anchor she knew. When she burst into Ryan’s office in tears, he had done what he always did, he tried to protect her. He closed the door, pulling her into his arms to offer comfort, whispering that everything would be fine. But the line between comfort and desire had always been dangerously thin for them. As Ryan wiped a stray tear from her cheek, his thumb lingered against her skin. Clara had leaned into his touch, her eyes locking onto his, and the raw vulnerability in the room instantly shifted into something volatile. The grief of her breakup morphed into a frantic, chaotic need to be wanted. Before either of them could fully realize the fire they were playing with, their hands were everywhere, fueled by an urgent, reckless panic. Ryan’s fingers tore at the buttons of his own shirt, discarding his tie onto the floor, while Clara frantically unzipped the back of her silk dress, letting it slide down her shoulders. Every touch was hurried, a breathless race to escape reality. Ryan guided her toward the edge of the mahogany desk, his hands gripping her waist as he gently but firmly bent her forward, facing away from him. The friction of their skin, the frantic sound of their breathing, and the sheer forbidden nature of the act consumed them entirely as they plunged into the familiar, toxic rhythm of their addiction, completely oblivious to the world outside until the heavy, echoing thud of Sofia’s bag hitting the floor shattered the illusion. Even though it had become a vice she couldn't shake, Ryan had actually been pulling away over the last few months. Everything had changed the moment he met Sofia. Sofia was a breath of fresh air, a pure, untainted light in Ryan’s complicated world. He loved her fiercely, and for the first time in his life, he had genuinely wanted to be a better man. He had been so incredibly proud of his progress, proud of the distance he had successfully built between himself and Clara over the weeks leading up to the engagement. This lingering, shameful little secret was the one thing he never wanted Sofia to know. He had genuinely believed he could bury it in the past, carry it to his grave, and build a beautiful, honest life with the woman he loved. Now, in the span of a single heartbeat, that dream had been utterly incinerated. The heavy glass doors at the end of the corridor groaned open, and the sound of heavy, dragging footsteps signaled Ryan’s return. He walked back into the office looking completely devastated, his shoulders slumped and his face entirely drained of color. He looked like a man who had watched his entire future burn to ash and was now standing in the rubble. He didn't look at Clara. He couldn't. "Go home," Ryan said, his voice a hollow, lifeless whisper that barely carried across the messy room. Clara swallowed hard, the guilt tightening around her throat. She pushed herself up from the floor, her hands trembling as she pulled her dress back over her shoulders and tried to fix her disheveled appearance. "Ryan… I’m so sorry," she choked out, her voice trembling with genuine remorse. "I didn't mean for…" Before she could finish, Ryan sharply raised his hand, signaling for her to stop. He closed his eyes tightly, shaking his head with a look of profound exhaustion. "Just leave me be for now, Clara. Please. Just go." Realizing there was absolutely nothing she could say to fix the catastrophic damage, Clara quietly finished dressing, gathered her belongings, and slipped out of the office, leaving him alone in the wreckage of his own making. Once the door clicked shut, Ryan sank onto the edge of the desk, burying his face in his hands for a long moment. Then, driven by a sudden, frantic spike of adrenaline, he reached into his pocket and picked up his phone. With shaking fingers, he found Sofia’s contact and hit dial. He pressed the phone to his ear, pacing the length of the scattered office as it began to ring. One. Two. Three. Miles away, the harsh, persistent ringing of the phone echoed sharply inside the tense cabin of Sofia’s car. The device lay on the passenger seat, the screen lit up with Ryan’s name and a picture of them smiling together from a happier time. Sofia kept both hands gripped tightly on the steering wheel, her knuckles turning stark white against the leather. Tears streamed down her face in a continuous, blinding torrent, blurring the red and white taillights of the traffic ahead of her. Her chest heaved with ragged, broken sobs that tore at her throat. Every time the phone rang, it felt like a fresh twist of a knife in her chest. Four. Five. As the call entered its fifth ring, Sofia couldn't take the torment anymore. Without breaking her gaze from the dark highway, she reached out with one trembling hand, snatched the phone, and violently held down the power button until the screen flashed and completely switched off. She threw the lifeless piece of plastic back onto the passenger seat, severing her final connection to him. Steeling her jaw, she looked back at the open road ahead. Sofia immediately pressed her foot harder against the gas pedal, the engine roaring to life as the car sped up, slicing through the darkness. She drove blindly into the night, heading toward her destination with a broken heart, completely swallowed by her tears.
