Jade POV

My heart was racing so fast as we came closer to the royal chamber that it ached. I was fully aware of why the king had summoned both of us but especially me. I knew it was related to the events that occurred within Angelica. I was caught aback by a sudden shiver and fear of what may happen.

I was aware that I might face a worse punishment if Angelica convinced everyone that I had attempted to murder her, and I knew that nobody would come to my defense since I had no power.

As we walked through the door, I was apprehensive about entering the throne chamber, and I could feel my heart racing swiftly. I let out a frustrated groan before clinching my fists and following Alaric into the throne room.

Angelica's harsh voice met us as soon as we came inside. She made an accusing motion at me with her finger. "She attacked me once again."

"Are you sure about that?" The alpha king asked.

I dropped down to my knees and bowed my head in surrender. "Your highness," I said, turning to him and the queen seated next to him. "None of what she has revealed with you is accurate," I assured them, knowing fully that they wouldn't believe me.

Angelica yelled, "liar! "she moved closer to me and continued her assault. She came up behind me and placed her hands on my shoulders. "How dare you lie against me when everyone saw what you did!"

"What did I do?" I rubbed the back of my neck and rolled my eyes. "Don't be silly!" I shouted at her, and she yelled back. I'd had enough of her perpetually negative attitude. She acted as though I had no choice but to be her puppet and follow her rules, and she appeared to insinuate that I did.

That made me wonder if I had become weak or if I was merely attempting to avoid getting murdered by doing so. My silence may have given the idea that I was protecting my child, but the fact was that I was tired of Angelica's trap and how she always treated me like garbage.

I had the opportunity to defend myself because I couldn't take it any longer, and there was no way I would let her abuse me like that.

"You are the one distributing incorrect information!" I grasped her shoulders as a second line of protection. "You are not the only one who can shout!"

She hit me across the face and said, "What impudence!"

I could taste blood in my mouth as my face was turned to the opposite side. I couldn't stop laughing and turned to face her. I'd gotten a couple of slaps from her, but that was about it. My hands were aching to do more to Angelica, and it didn't stop until I raised one of them and smacked her across the face. My hands stopped itching after that.

The royal room was deafeningly quiet, as no one had expected. I could hear gasps from the Luna Queen and the princes, including Nicholas, but it didn't scare me at all.

I couldn't stand being addressed in that manner any longer. Even though I was poor and had nothing, I couldn't just sit by and watch myself getting used to ridiculing.

Angelica shrieked at me. "Did you just slap my face?"

"I did it!" I responded to her ranting with my own. She thought she was the only one who could scream, but I demonstrated that my lungs were more potent than hers. "What did I do so wrong to deserve all of this?" I yelled at her. "I know you despise me, but it doesn't give you the right to abuse me this way!" I paused and ruffled my hair.

"I did you a favor, and I don't care if you call me names; still, I will never let you treat me like this all the time!" I slapped my chest in response. "I will never let you disrespect me like this again!" I let the tears flow freely as I expressed myself.

"Why do I suffer so much because I have no power, huh?" I said. ‘’why!’’ I was completely unaware that Alaric had approached me because I was paying close attention to what was being said. He moved Angelica, who was still stunned, out of the way and grabbed me, causing me to be pulled up.

He smacked me across the face and yelled. "bullshit! How dare you touch her with your dirty hands!" he yelled at me.

The queen cried out as he watched his son hit me. Alaric!" she called, but she was ignored.

Alaric had me cornered against the nearest wall and then smacked me in the face in what felt like the blink of an eye.

"Pathetic!" I said, laughing and spitting out the blood in my mouth. ‘’coward!’’

He roared at me and grabbed my throat, demanding, "Who the hell are you calling a coward?"

"If you don't want to lose your hands, let go of her," Nicholas threatened his brother while standing behind him.

Alaric did not respond, instead increasing the pressure on my throat. I screamed at Alaric and nearly choked on my breath as I struggled to take a break

"I told you to let go of her!" Nicholas said as he grabbed Alaric's hand and pushed it behind him. "I told you to let her go!" He gave him a chest bump, which sent him flying into the wall. "How dare you touch what is mine!" he screamed.

While glancing at Nicholas, I let out a gasp. When he referred to me as "his," I had no idea what he meant. I saw that he was starting to develop furs on his hands. When he moved his hand forward, I noticed that his nails were being replaced by claws, which could only mean he was shifting into his wolf form.

It's terrible news.

"I'm going to murder you," he yelled, his voice becoming louder as he came closer to his brother. "I'm going to murder you."

"Nicholas!" shouted the queen, falling into tears. She pleaded with him to stop whatever he was about to do.

The alpha king might have stopped him, but instead, he kept mute and let him march toward his brother. It made me wonder why the Alpha didn't intervene and why the brothers were permitted to abuse one another without consequence.

"Lucas!" cried the queen at the king, but he ignored her cries.

When I realized the king would not do anything to stop it, I raced up to Nicholas and gave him a bear hug from behind. I begged him to listen to me. I have no idea why I ever thought I would be able to prevent him from harming his brother. It took me entirely by surprise when he didn't try to remove my hands from his waist and instead just left me alone.

"Please," I begged of you.

When I heard him let out a big sigh, I spun around to face him. "Are you all right?" he said, his voice anxious.

I couldn't figure out what caused his quick change in tone, but I liked that he took my side, as opposed to the normal circumstance in which he always stayed behind and watched as I suffered alone. I answered his question with a grin and a nod, and he caressed my face.

"Nicolas!" shouted the queen, and I turned to face her as we were suddenly separated. She was moving in my direction with apparent rage written all over her face. "You witch!" she yelled as she lifted her fist to strike her. I closed my eyes and waited for her to hit me in the face, but she never did.

I was taken aback.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Nicholas clutching his mother's hand. By putting my palms over my lips, I attempted to suppress the choking sound coming from my mouth. He just put his hand on his mother's shoulder to stop her from striking me.

"Nicolas!" screamed the king as he sprang to his feet and approached Nicholas. "Let go of your mother's hand right now!"

Nicholas did as ordered and let go of his mother's hand. He pretended to be humble in front of his mother and apologized excessively. "I apologize for my unacceptable actions," he said.

The queen did not respond and instead turned back to face me. She grabbed my hair and yanked so hard that the skin on my head started to burn. "It's all because of this witch!" said the queen as she hauled me to the ground and accused me of witchcraft. "How dare you join the royal family only to destroy us," they said.

It was vital for me to defend myself since the assertion was false. "Your Majesty, that is......"

The luna queen shouted at me. "shut up, you peasant. "

I was dumbfounded for the rest of the talk. The queen's transition from a lovely and sympathetic lady to someone who despises me astonished me.

"You have bewitched my child, and I am going to take your life now!" she shouted for the royal guards. "Take her away and lock her up....."

Nicholas cut off his mother before she could finish talking. "Enough, mother!" he shouted. "I am not going to let that happen to her," he stated.

‘’Nicholas. You have no authority to stop your mum from doing anything! " The King scolded him.

"she is my mate!" he announced, stunning everyone in the throne room.

Angelica, who had stayed silent after I smacked her, abruptly broke her silence. "That is not possible! Mates do not exist, and the only way to obtain them is by natural selection."

The alpha king moved closer to Nicholas. "What nonsense are you saying?" He shouted at the prince and slammed him on the shoulder. "Are you going to side with this witch? Awaken your senses!"

"I am stating the truth!" Nicholas said as he grabbed my hand and lifted me off the ground. "I'm telling you the truth!" he repeated. "She is my mate!" he drew me closer to himself.

"Oh my!" The queen said, sobbing. "You have bewitched my kid!" she accused me again.

As I glanced at Nicholas, I thought that mates had ceased to exist. I couldn't help but wonder whether he'd said it to shield me from the royals waiting to kill me.

"My wolf is protective of her and would never stand by and watch her placed in danger!" he stated.

"Nicholas!" The Queen shouted. "is it because of your pup that she is carrying?"

Pup? Is that why he called us to mate in the first place? It was all because of his wolf. His brother's assault and joining my side was all his wolf's doing, which isn't fair.

" no," Nicholas shook his head. "It's not just about my pup or wolf," he explained. "she is my mate!"

"Impossible!" cried Angelica as she sank to the ground and positioned herself there.

"Are you sure about this?"The Alpha king demanded.

Nicholas responded with a little nod. "She is my mate, and she will not be exposed to any type of cruelty from now on!"

As he spoke more, tears streamed down my cheeks, and I bit the inside of my lower lip to keep them from dropping. For the first time, I had someone on my side, and it felt incredible.
