Yasmine picked up her bag and looked at the time.
6: 10pm.
She would go see her mother for an hour in the hospital, and head to Là Calantrò.
After all she only had to perform around 8: 00 pm. She would try to make it early to the dorms today, no matter how Madame Glenna asked her to stay.
As she headed out of the room and closed the door behind her, she suddenly heard a familiar feminine voice call her name.
"Miss Yasmine Meyers."
She turned and looked. It was a woman in her early forties, frowning deeply at her. Yasmine suddenly felt goosebumps all over her body. This wasn't good.
It was her dorm mistress, Mrs Peters.
"Good evening, Mrs Peters," She greeted politely.
"And where are you heading out to this evening, if I may ask, miss Yasmine? " Mrs Peters asked her, without replying her greeting.
"To the hospital," Yasmine replied and Mrs Peters raised her brow.
"At this time? " She asked. "Why don't you go tomorrow? It's already late as it is, and I'm sure the hospital might not allow visitors at this time of the day. "
"I will just go and ask of her health from the doctors, if they don't allow me to see her, "Yasmine said. "And besides, I have to buy her drugs today. The doctor called me and told me to bring some money for her prescribed drugs. "
"Can't you do that tomorrow?"
"Ma'am, I can't. My mom's health is paramount to me. And I would be busy tomorrow attending night classes. Besides, her drugs are going to finish tomorrow morning, as the doctor told me. " Yasmine said. Now she was getting impatient. Even talking to this woman was time wasting. She had to be at Là Calantrò before 8'o clock.
"Ma'am, I'll be quick, " She said. "My mom's surgery would be coming up soon, so I have to be by her side at every chance I get. And I'm sorry to say this ma'am, but standing here and talking to you is wasting time," she said and Mrs Peters frowned. Well Yasmine had no choice. She had to say what was in her mind, even if it meant offending this woman. After all, she was the one complaining that she was coming back late and here she was again, wasting her time.
"I'll be quick ma'am," She repeated. "I promise."
Mrs Peters sighed deeply. "I understand that you aid doing everything you can for your mother, and you are coping with your studies at the same time, which is very hectic for a young lady like you. I mean, you're just 21, am I right?"
"That's correct, ma'am, " Yasmine replied.
"Coming back to the dorm late is going against the rules of college, and I know you know that. I understand your predicament, but try to meet up with the rules of this school, to avoid being sent out of the dormitory. "
"Yes ma'am."
Mrs Peters looked at her carefully and said; " I would try to help you by apologizing to the management on your behalf for a while, but if this continues, I'm sorry to say but you would be sent out of the dormitory."
"I understand ma'am, " Yasmine said, as she fiddled her fingers together. "I'll try my best to obey the school rules and regulations. "
"I want actions, not plain words, miss Yasmine," Mrs Peters said. "Have a good day."
And with that, she walked away without looking back. Yasmine sighed heavily. That was a close one. She thought she would be sent out today. Turns out Mrs Peters only just slowed up to give her a warning. She was sure, the next time Mrs Peters would ask to see her or just show up out of the blue like what she did today, she would be going to the disciplinary committee and she would be sent out too.
Yasmine couldn't just understand what was going on in her life. First she had to meet up to pay her mother's treatment at the hospital and buy her drugs, and at the same time meet up her working schedule in Là Calantrò.
Now she had to meet up with the rules and regulations of her school by not coming late to the dormitory.
Could things get any worse than this?
She got out of college after submitting her pass to the gatekeeper and she started heading out to the hospital. She got to a busy road and her mind was racing with thoughts. She couldn't even see the people who were passing by her clearly. Oblivious of her surroundings, she got to another damp street and was about to cross the road when she suddenly heard the loud screeching sound of a car and she immediately jolted up from her reverie. She looked beside her and saw a nice black SUV beside her, almost about to hit her. It was just a inch away from her. Then she looked behind her and then realized she had cross the road absentmindedly without knowing a speeding car was coming. In shock, she fell to the ground, panting. She just escaped death narrowly. If not because the driver was very experienced, she would have been knocked over badly and would have even died on a spot.
Who would take care of her mother then?
"Hey miss, are you okay? " She heard an unfamiliar masculine voice say beside her, but she couldn't bring herself to look up at the person who asked the question, let alone give him an answer.
"Bradley, weren't you looking? You almost killed a girl!" She heard another man's voice say. In her blurry eyes, she saw caught a glimpse of his expensive leather shoe, coming towards her. And the way his voice intimidated the man standing next to her, immediately made her realize he was the owner the expensive SUV that almost took her life.
"I'm sorry sir, she just showed up out of nowhere and crossed the road without looking. . ."
"Be watchful next time, Bradley. " The man immediately cut him off.
"Yes sir. "
"Is she hurt? " He asked the man named Bradley again.
"No, I don't think so boss, " Another man replied instead. "She doesn't have a scratch."
"Then why isn't she standing up, or even talking?" He asked again.
"Probably out of shock, sir, " The other man replied again. "She must be in shock that's why she is unable to react. "
"Move aside, Bradley."
"Yes sir."
The man referred to as "boss" suddenly towered her with his figure and he slightly bent down to look at the girl his car almost knocked over.
"Hey, lady, " He said. "Are you hurt anywhere? " He asked.
And then Yasmine shook her head gently.
"Okay, can you try to stand then? " He asked.
Yasmine nodded in response.
"Bradley, Jerry, help her up," The man said and backed away a little. The other two men, Bradley and Jerry walked closer to her and were about to help her up when Yasmine suddenly spoke up.
"Don't worry, I can help myself. " She said in a clear voice that even Bradley and Jerry froze in their position, surprised the girl suddenly voiced out. Even their boss was startled.
"So she speaks," He said and walked closer to her. "I thought you didn't, " He said, looking her her smiling. And then Yasmine raised her head up to look at him.
"I was in shock, that's why. Your driver almost killed me with your car."
"But you suddenly crossed the road and. . ." Bradley was trying to explain but the man suddenly raised his hand up, and Bradley immediately kept quiet.
"I think you're quite mistaken, miss," He said, smiling, as he tucked his hand into his pocket. "You crossed the road without looking and you try to put the blame on my driver. That's not nice."
Yasmine suddenly sighed and smiled a little. "I'm sorry about that, I was just saying my mind. This is quite a damp street, not a main road. You should tell your driver not to speed up in a street." She said boldly. "If he continues, he might really kill a person and end up in jail." She said and the men were taken aback with her response.
Does this young girl knows who she is talking to?
The man on the other hand chuckled softly. He looked at her and smiled. "Well, you're correct on that," He said. "He shouldn't speed up in a street. " He walked forward towards her, but the girl was unfazed. She didn't move an inch, and she looked him straight in the eyes.
"So what now? " The man asked. "You want a compensation? How much do you want? "
Yasmine sighed. Who does this man think he is? He almost killed her with his car and now he is asking her to tell him her price? Why? To keep her mouth shut?
"I'm sorry sir, I don't need your money," She said. "I don't collect money from strangers. "
The man chuckled. "I see Mama's taught you well, " He said. He looked at her up and down. "You look like you're headed somewhere. Should I give you a lift?" He asked.
Yasmine shook her head. "No I don't sir," She said. "Where I'm headed is not far away from here. And I'm sorry for wasting your time. I'll take my leave now." And with that, she bowed slightly and walked away from the man and his body guards, without sparing them a glance.
As Yasmine passed his convoy, she immediately knew who he was. He was obviously rich, but there was one thing that Yasmine noticed about his convoy. Only most rich drug dealers passed damp streets with lined up cars. Yasmine came to a conclusion that he was a drug dealer, if not a Don. Though he was a handsome man, Yasmine didn't like him at all. That was why she spoke to him the way she did. He was a rich spoilt brat, obviously, asking her if she wants compensation, and he was a drug dealer. Yasmine didn't like drug dealers. After all they were the ones who killed her father. She detested them ever since. Yasmine tried to forget about everything that's transpired between her and the handsome man, and try to focus on getting to the hospital in time to see her mother.
As Erick watched the girl go, he chuckled. He must say, he admired her courage. She was in the midst of three men, and she didn't even flinch. He was sure she wasn't even scared of dying if his car had really hit her.
"Let's go boys," He said and walked to his car.
As he got in and Bradley drove off, he reminisce on the events that just happened. He was reading some article on his phone when Bradley suddenly screeched the car into a halt. Then Bradley went out immediately. Erick figured he might have hit someone, or something.
"What happened Jerry? " He asked his right hand man. "I think Bradley almost collided the car with a girl."
Erick brows furrowed. "A girl? " He said, and stepped out of the car, only to see Bradley crouched before a small figure, asking her if she was okay.
And when he got closer, he found out it was truly a girl. And when she suddenly spoke up after he told his men to help her up, he was very surprised. She had a clear, calm and sweet voice, but she sounded troubled for some reason. He was sure it wasn't because she was almost hit by a speeding car. And when she looked up at him, he noticed the color of her hair. It was full, curly and long and it was the colour of carrots. It reminded him the colour of his mother's hair. And she had nice green eyes. She was so peculiar looking, he held his breath without realizing it. She was really beautiful, even though he couldn't see her face fully because it was late at night. He smiled as he remembered her voice again, telling him she didn't need his money. She was a fierce girl. He liked her boldness.
And for some reason, he wished he could see her again.
