Chapter 5: Choosing Love Again
The restaurant grew painfully quiet after Victoriaâs words.
Every conversation around them seemed to fade as Zara looked from Daniel to the woman standing beside their table.
âYou know her?â Zara asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment before answering.
âYes.â
Victoria folded her arms and gave Zara a sympathetic smile that didnât reach her eyes.
âHe told you about me, didnât he?â
Danielâs expression hardened.
âThatâs enough, Victoria.â
âOh, is it?â she replied. âOr are you afraid sheâll find out who you really are?â
Zaraâs chest tightened.
She picked up her handbag and stood.
âI think I should leave.â
âZara, please,â Daniel pleaded. âLet me explain.â
She looked into his eyes, searching for the honesty she had come to trust.
âYou should have explained a long time ago.â
Without another word, she walked away, leaving Daniel standing in the middle of the restaurant.
The next few days were the longest Zara had experienced in months.
Daniel called.
She didnât answer.
He sent messages.
She couldnât bring herself to read them.
Although she was hurt, what troubled her most wasnât Victoriaâs appearanceâit was the realization that Daniel had hidden an important part of his past.
If he truly cared about her, why hadnât he trusted her with the truth?
On Sunday afternoon, there was a knock on her apartment door.
She hesitated before opening it.
Daniel stood outside, looking exhausted. Dark circles framed his eyes, and he held no flowers this timeâonly a small envelope.
âI know you donât owe me anything,â he said quietly. âBut please give me ten minutes.â
After a long silence, Zara stepped aside.
Daniel sat across from her in the living room and placed the envelope on the table.
âThose are newspaper articles from three years ago,â he said.
Curious, Zara opened them.
They told the story of a high-profile engagement between Daniel and Victoria, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The engagement had ended suddenly after Victoria admitted she had only agreed to the marriage to gain influence over Danielâs family company.
âI loved her,â Daniel admitted. âOr at least I thought I did. When I discovered why she was really with me, it nearly destroyed me.â
He looked directly at Zara.
âWhen I met you again on that bus, I promised myself I wouldnât let my past become your burden. I thought staying silent would protect what we were beginning to build.â
Zara lowered her eyes.
âYou should have trusted me enough to let me decide.â
âI know.â
Danielâs voice broke with regret.
âAnd Iâll spend every day proving I can earn that trust back.â
He reached for her hand but stopped just short of touching it.
âIâve fallen in love with you, Zara. Not because of fate, not because of your father, but because of the woman youâve become. I donât expect forgiveness today. I only ask for one chance to show you that my future has no secrets.â
Tears filled Zaraâs eyes.
Before she could answer, her phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
She answered immediately.
âHello?â
A worried voice spoke from the other end.
âMiss Zara Bello? This is City General Hospital. Your mother collapsed earlier this evening and has been admitted to the emergency unit. You need to come immediately.â
The color drained from Zaraâs face.
The phone slipped from her trembling fingers.
Without asking a single question, Daniel picked up his car keys.
âIâm taking you to the hospital.â
For the first time since they met, neither of them knew what awaited them next.
