I wake with a startle, I chuck my covers off of me, get to my feet, and dash to the front door. I quickly open it to find her on the other side. "Rebecca? What's going on?" I ask her in a daze rubbing my eyes in complete confusion, Rebecca has been my best friend since freshman year. Her thin, short brown hair is wispping in the light spring breeze. There are tears welling in her almond, light brown eyes, and her pink lips are quivering. "Johnny broke up with me!" She wails. The tears start to come down like rain from her cheeks. Her purse hanging off of her shoulder gets caught on the doorknob as she storms inside, and her body jerks back. "Oh my god can anything else go wrong today?" She cries out as she puts her head down in defeat. "I just don't understand, why doesn't he want me anymore?" She looks up again to me with tears still streaking down her face.
I take her arm in mine, and lead her to the kitchen after shutting the door. Once we reach the kitchen her mouth gapes open as her eyes land on the flowers. "Did Derek apologize, you guys aren't back together are you? Jessica, tell me you're not that stupid." Rebecca rambles. "God no, who do you think I am?" I say offended. "Who are the flowers from then? Because I know you didn't go out and purchase them." Rebecca states. "They are from Bradly alright? He stopped by to see how I was doing." I explain to her. "Oh.." Rebecca says looking down at them with pierced lips and arms crossed. Her hair is in a half up situation, an attempt at that, her white track shirt has a coffee stain on it, all to go with her stained black sweatpants. "Wanna drink?" I ask, as I pour her a shot of crown royal. She turns her attention toward me and forces a smile. "That sounds nice, thanks." I hand her the shot glass, and she downs it. "You're not going to have any?" She asks looking confused, while I put the liquor back into the freezer. "Havent been able to since getting the crap kicked out of me." I explain. To tell you the truth, his is the longest I have been sober in a year. I haven't been able to keep alot down. "Soo, Johnny?" I ask. Rebecca scoffs "Ya, I guess he wants to explore other options.." Her eyes tearing up again. "I might just have Brett take me out tonight." She says as she shrugs her shoulders. "The funnel cake guy? Didn't you give him your number like two weeks ago when you and Brett were fighting?" I ask still shocked. Not at the fact that she gave her number to a different guy, but at the fact that she still has his number in her phone. "Ya, I sent him a message after Johnny called it off." She sniffles. It's hard for me to feel bad for her. She has guys coming after her left and right, and she cheats on every single one of them. "Listen, I have to get going, I have to be at work soon. Love you." She says blowing me a kiss as she heads to the door to leave. "Love you too, be safe." I blow a kiss back to her. Short visits likes this with Rebecca were not uncommon. She always stops by unannounced, and does as she pleases, whenever, wherever.
I watch as she leaves in her white Toyota Camry. As she pulls out of the driveway I go back inside and make myself a cup of coffee. A few minutes after the coffee is made in the pot, I grab my creamer out of the fridge and start pouring it into my forest green mug. After the creamer takes it place into my mug, I start to pour the dark liquid into my cup. I take a seat in the livingroom and pull out my phone. I scroll through social media for a little while and lose track of time. It's nice to get out of my head for a while; living like this can be kind of lonely sometimes. Although I should probably get back to work, rent is due again and I don't have any money.
"Hey, Bradly it's Jess. When is a good time for me to come back?" I hit send and wait for a response. While I am waiting for him to get back to me I see a new message from the landlord. "Hey girl, it's Jamie. Austin told me what happened. He's already paid rent this month so no need to worry about that. Hope as is well." Wow, I don't need to pay this month... I do have to say that is a first. My phone vibrates in my hands and a message from Bradly pops up. "Whenever you want, you can now if you want I don't care." I text him back instantly "I will be there in 30."
Although I don't need to pay rent this month it would be nice to have some extra money for lunch when I go back to school. I get my uniform in order and climb into it. I brush out the tangled mess out of my hair, and toss on some makeup. My lip is still a little busted up but other than that I have healed pretty good. I take one last look in the mirror and head out grabbing my jean jacket. I climb into my purple jeep and take off. I roll my drivers side window down and blast some music on my Nickelback CD, and for the first time in what feels like months, I feel free.
