He Slept Over

1097 Words
The faint sound of crickets chirping in the distance, Alice had just finished making dinner and was looking forward to enjoying her meal. She was ready to relax and unwind when suddenly, there was a cease of light, causing darkness on every side of her house. In the next second, Alice set the table and lit some candles on every corner of her house, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere in her small apartment. She placed some of the candles in the sitting room as well so her boss won't get mad when he wakes and sees that she kept him in the dark. She had made her favorite dish, spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce and a side salad. The aroma of the food filled the air, making her stomach growl in anticipation. Once everything was ready, Alice sat down on a chair in the room to eat. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, savoring the taste of the first bite. The spaghetti was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was bursting with flavor. The salad was fresh and crisp, providing a nice contrast to the warm pasta. As Alice ate, she thought about her day. It had been a long and exhausting process. After finishing her meal, Alice cleared the table and washed the dishes. She lit some more candles in her bedroom, creating a soothing and relaxing ambiance. She then drew herself a warm bath, adding some lavender essential oil to help her unwind. As the water filled the tub, Alice undressed and stepped inside. She closed her eyes and let out a long sigh, feeling the warm water envelop her body. She leaned back and rested her head on the edge of the tub. Alice stayed in the bath for a while, enjoying the peace and quiet of her surroundings. After a while, Alice decided it was time to get out of the bath. She dried herself off and put on her favorite pajamas, a soft and cozy set that always made her feel comfortable. She brushed her teeth and rinsed her teeth and face and then climbed into bed. Alice snuggled under the covers and turned off the lights. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the stress of the day fade away. She thought about all the things she was grateful for, her health, having her best friend around her and most especially, her little sister. As she drifted off to sleep, Alice felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over her. She closed her eyes and let herself drift off into a deep and restful sleep, looking forward to the new day that awaited her. Back at the sitting room… Damon had been sleeping soundly on the couch when he was suddenly woken up by the sound of a baby crying. He groaned and rolled over, trying to ignore the noise and go back to sleep. But the crying continued, growing louder and more insistent with each passing moment. Finally, Damon could take it no longer. He stomped and realized he had slept off at Alice's house. He saw that a blanket had covered his body properly, he sighed, realizing Alice was responsible for that. Now heading towards the source of the noise, as he approached Alice's room, he could hear the crying growing louder and more frantic. He scowled, already preparing a verbal lashing for whoever was responsible for disturbing his precious sleep, Alice and her little sister. As he opened the door to Alice's room, his eyes met a dark room but with the help of his phone light, he saw the little baby on the bed crying and Alice who was deeply asleep laying on the bed, next to her little sister. His anger dissipated in an instant. He found himself unable to summon even a fraction of his usual anger He looked at the clock hung on the wall and saw it was 2:00 am. He sighed. The baby continued to cry, tears streaming down her chubby cheeks. Damon felt a pang of guilt as he pointed his light on her and looked at her. He also looked at Alice as his eyes were welcomed by her sleeping and innocent face as he stared at Alice's face for a few minutes. Then, on impulse, he reached down and picked up the baby, cradling her in his arms. Her crying began to subside as he rocked her gently back and forth, and he felt a sense of warmth and tenderness spreading through his chest. For the first time in his life, Damon felt truly vulnerable. He was used to being in control, to being the one who called the shots. But here he was, holding a tiny, helpless creature, and he had no idea what to do. He had never felt so powerless. As he held the baby, Damon began to reflect on his own life. He had always been focused on success, on power and wealth and status. But what did any of that really matter in the grand scheme of things? Here was this little baby, who had nothing to her name except for her innocence and her vulnerability, and yet she seemed to hold the key to something that Damon had been missing his whole life. He stayed with the baby for hours, rocking her back and forth and watching her sleep. He felt a sense of peace that he had never experienced before. His cold eyes dimed, flickering over the little form of the infant on the bed. He never wanted the responsibility or any inconvenience but here he was, feeling relieved and didn't notice the baby had inconvenienced him. Damon rubbed his tired eyes, feeling the weight of exhaustion settling heavily onto his shoulders. It was already 4:00 AM, and he had been up because of the little innocent creature. But as he watched the baby sleep, he realized that there was more to life than just money and success. He imagined how his life would turn out to be if he got a lovely wife and beautiful kid who would depend on him and make his life peaceful but then, he shook out the thought from his head and returned back to reality. With a heavy sigh, Damon rose and made his way back to the sitting room, where he had been sleeping on the couch. He settled back down, pulling the blanket up over his shoulders, and closed his eyes. But sleep did not come easily. His mind was filled with thoughts of the baby.
