Chapter 2: Through the haze

820 Words
As she got outside the bar, almost immediately, Kylie saw few of her course mates and tried her possible best to hide herself from them because she knew what was going to happen. Although the night was cool but it contrasted to the heated tension she had just escaped from. Her pulse was still racing and her body was trembling from the near assault. And now she had to avoid trouble. They seemed to be laughing...her course mates. Just as she crawled, almost escaping, Jessica, one of them spotted her."Well, the talk of the devil." "Still slumming it , Kylie? Working at that dump?" Jessica continued, her voice dripping with disdain."Guess you're not as smart as you pretend to be in class." Kylie clenched her fists at her sides, her face heating up. She had no words. Their cruelty hit a raw nerve on her financial struggles, her Inability to fit in with their designer clothes and flashy lives. "Not everyone has a daddy's credit card to pay for school," Kylie mutter under her breath, trying to move past them, but they blocked her way. "Oh, please," another girl dimmed in."Maybe if you didn't waste your time waitressing, you wouldn't be so behind in class. I mean what's the point of studying video games when you can't even afford the equipments." "Leave me alone," Kylie said as she tried to move past them,to get home and leave this night behind her,but Jessica wasn't having it. She blocked her path, standing tall in her heels and flashing an exaggerated pout. "Leaving so soon? We're just getting started," She said, stepping closer, her voice lowering into a nasty whisper."Don't pretend you're better than us, Kylie. Do you think we don't know about your crippled brother who donated his bone marrow to you years ago? You're nothing. Always have been." Kylie's jaw clenched but her body felt heavy. Life had not treated her fair. She took a shaky step backwards but Lisa was behind her in an instant, shoving her into the wall. Pain shot through her head as it hit the cold brick with a full thud, her vision blurring. She tried to steady herself, but her legs gave out beneath her. Laughter echoed around her as she slid into the ground, her body limp and her mind fuzzy. She could hear Jessica and the others taunting her,but the words were distant, distorted. The pain in her head made it hard to focus, her thoughts scattering as the dizziness took over. Through her half closed eyes, Kylie saw them walk away, their laughter fading into the night. She tried to push herself up but couldn't find the strength. Her head throbbed and she felt nauseous. For a moment, everything around her seemed to spin. Footsteps approached from behind. She was too weak to react, her vision too blurred to see who it was. All she knew was a sense of familiarity. The person seemed to be the guy that saved her from the disgusting client earlier. The footsteps grew louder, more urgent, until she felt a hand on her shoulder, gently shaking her. "Hey?" The voice was low, calm but concerned. She blinked, trying to focus, but her eyes refused to cooperate. She could barely see the man kneeling in front of her,his hands were warm as they lifted her from the ground. "Hey,can you hear me?" He asked, his voice clearer now but her mind was too foggy to make sense of it. She nodded weakly, her breath shallow as she leaned into him, barely aware of what was happening. "Can you stand?" Kylie tried to nod again but everything hurt. The world around her tilted dangerously and she had to cling to his arm to keep from collapsing. "Stay with me," he murmured, holding her up as he fumbled with his phone."You need a doctor. I'm calling someone to take you to the hospital." She barely registered his words, her mind clouded with pain and exhaustion. "Hey Enzo," The voice through the phone said. "Jace, it's me... I'm behind The Silver Lounge... I need you to come quick. There's a girl here... She's hurt, and I can't stay. Just get here fast." Enzo said into his phone, his voice urgent but calm. Kylie felt him shift beside her,his head resting lightly on her shoulder to keep her steady."Someone's coming to take you to the hospital," he said softly. Just hang in there, okay? I'll wait with you until they get here." She wanted to thank him,to ask who he was and so she clung into him,she felt something stuck into her weak hands_cold but metallic, maybe a bracelet or something. She leaned against him,her body weak and trembling until another set of footsteps echoed down the valley. "I'll take her," a voice said.It was Jace."She'll be okay." Enzo nodded, stepping back."Good. I have to go now." Before Kylie could make sense of anything,Enzo was gone, disappearing into the night. Jace guided her towards his car, helping her into the backseat before driving her to the hospital.
