Chapter Seven
Gabrielle didn’t see Robert at dinner the next night, or for the next five nights. He flew to New York on business, not bothering to tell her. She heard the news from Penny and stewed for nearly an hour before she let the matter slide. There was nothing she could do about his abrupt departure except wait for his return.
While he was away, she was alone in the house a good deal of the day. When Penny wasn’t working, she often slipped out to Hunter’s. Though it wasn’t a problem for Gabrielle that Penny wanted to spend her time with the man she loved, the woman was inclined to make her exits in secret, as though she had to hide her comings and goings from the absent master of the house.
