THIRTY-SIX I usually didn't pay much attention to the band or the music when I was working. There were too many other things to occupy my mind. Like why Otto hadn't turned up for work this week and he wasn't answering his phone, either. He wouldn't be the first – s**t, not even the tenth – guy to decide that security wasn't for him and not even bother to give notice. The welfare office sent unemployed guys on a short course in security and my boss, Dennis, was a sucker for hiring them. If they looked intimidating enough, even the few weeks' work he'd get out of them was good enough for him. Most new staff didn't stay long.
