The Secret Meeting

The Blood Moon Rises The blood moon hung heavy over the forest, fat and red as if the sky itself bled. It was the kind of night whispered about in old tales—the night when bonds were impossible to ignore. When wolves who denied their mates lost themselves to madness. Aria felt it the moment it rose. Her wolf stirred, restless, pacing beneath her skin. The air tasted of copper and smoke, and her chest burned with a need she couldn’t name. Find him. “No,” she whispered, clutching the railing of her balcony until her knuckles turned white. She had just spilled blood for her father’s approval, had sworn on her pack’s honor that she would bury the Shadowfang Alpha beneath her claws. And yet… every breath was thick with his scent. Musk, pine, storm. It lured her like a drug. Her wolf pressed harder. He’s waiting. ⸻ Across the River Kael’s night was no easier. The blood moon lit his chambers like a wound. His wolf clawed inside him, snarling, demanding, restless. He couldn’t sit, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Her scent haunted him. Wild roses. Frost on steel. A heartbeat in the silence. She is mine. Kael gritted his teeth, slamming a fist into the wall until stone cracked beneath his knuckles. “No,” he growled to the empty room. “I will not bend.” But his wolf only laughed, shoving him toward the forest. And Kael, for all his fury, found his feet carrying him there. ⸻ The Meeting Place They collided at the river’s edge, just as they had nights before, drawn by something older and crueler than choice. Aria froze when she saw him. His golden eyes burned like fire, his chest rising and falling with ragged breaths. He looked as undone as she felt. “I told myself I wouldn’t come,” she whispered. Kael’s lips curled into something between a snarl and a plea. “And yet here you are.” Silence stretched. The river whispered, the blood moon glared down like a witness. “Do you feel it?” Kael demanded, his voice rough. “This… hunger. This chain.” Aria’s nails bit into her palms. “I hate it.” “No, you don’t.” Her eyes snapped to his, fury and desperation clashing in their depths. “I do. I have to. You are my enemy. You are the reason my people bury their dead each week. I hate you.” “Then why are you shaking?” he snarled, stepping closer, closing the distance between them like a predator. “Why does your wolf cry for me every night?” Aria’s breath hitched. Her wolf whimpered traitorously inside her, leaning toward him, begging for what her mind refused. “You don’t understand,” she whispered. “If they find us…” “They won’t.” His voice dropped to a dangerous rasp, so low she felt it in her bones. “And even if they do… I don’t care.” Aria’s chest heaved. “You would risk everything? For this?” Kael’s eyes burned brighter. “For you.” ⸻ The First Kiss The words shattered the last fragile thread holding them apart. Aria’s body moved before her mind caught up. One moment she was glaring at him, trembling with fury and want—the next his mouth was on hers. It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t sweet. It was war. Their lips crashed, fierce and desperate, teeth clashing, hands tangling in hair and fabric. She shoved him back, only to drag him closer again. He gripped her waist like he’d tear the world apart before letting go. Her wolf howled in triumph, the bond surging like wildfire. Heat rolled through her veins, setting every nerve ablaze. Kael groaned into her mouth, the sound raw, feral. “Gods, Aria…” She broke away, panting, eyes wide, lips swollen. “This is wrong.” He caught her jaw in his hand, forcing her to meet his blazing gaze. “Then let’s be wrong.” And he kissed her again. ⸻ The Breaking Point When they finally tore apart, gasping, the night spun around them. Aria’s knees threatened to buckle. Her heart hammered so hard it hurt. She stumbled back, shaking her head. “No… no, this is madness. We can’t—” “You think I don’t know that?” Kael’s voice cracked like thunder. “Every moment I’m not with you, I’m burning alive. Every time I see your face, I want to claim you and damn the rest. I’ve fought battles my whole life, Aria, but this? This is the only war I can’t win.” Her breath caught. Her wolf whimpered, leaning toward him despite everything. “Then we are doomed,” she whispered. Kael’s gaze softened, pain flickering behind the fire. He reached out, brushing his thumb across her cheek. She didn’t pull away this time. “Maybe,” he murmured. “Or maybe we’re the only chance these cursed packs have of peace.” Her eyes widened, a spark of something dangerous—hope—lighting in her chest. But before she could speak, a howl split the night. Moonveil. Close. Aria jolted, panic flooding her veins. “They’re coming.” Kael snarled, eyes flashing. “Go. Before they scent us together.” She hesitated, torn in two. She wanted to stay, to fall into his arms again and never leave. But she forced herself back, step by step, until the shadows swallowed her. Kael stood at the river’s edge long after she was gone, chest heaving, lips still tasting of her. The blood moon glared down, red and merciless. And Kael whispered to it, voice low and raw: “She is mine. And I will burn this world before I give her up.”
