once upon a time,
there was only darkness
Chapter Eleven:
The weather was destructive. Lightening crashed onto the ground, starting up small forest fires in the area. Paige quickly told her men to clear up, her anger rising at the thought of this delay.
Hunter and her lead the group from the front and Sage and Gem pushed them from behind.
She shouldn't even be in the leader position. Paige glanced over her shoulder, staring at the group of hunters behind her. They were all there on a sole purpose: to end these creatures' lives. She knew more than half will die, but everyone was replaceable.
"Hunter," she turned her head to her older brother, who refused to let her to carry anything. "What exactly is Gem's rank?"
Hunter gave a sly smile, "She's like a top hunter in her group." He couldn't help, but want her at his side. The unrecognized human mate bond was growing stronger. It was taking a toll on his mind.
"That doesn't make her capable to be in a leader's position, Hunter," Paige snapped, she felt her finger nails grow to be claws. She took deep breaths, unaware of her brother's deep gaze.
She'll die on this battle field anyways. Her life is extendable.
"Paige, maybe you should sit down. The fires will get taken out by the heavy rain coming this way." Hunter gripped her arm, and Sacrifice roared in her head. She didn't like anybody touching or taking what was hers.
Paige slowly nodded her head, you foul creature have no right thinking those things about my blood. She turned around, yelling at the group to take a break.
Sage and Gem slowly made their way through the crowed, heading towards the Kill siblings. Their conversation falling short to everyone ears, but Paige heard everything.
"She's sick, Sage. I really don't think she should be out here," Gem whispered, pleading. She hoped if she could get away from violence and to some Alpha, Paige may be able to control her violent instincts. "It took a month to heal her cut throat."
Sage shook her head, "It's better than her cramped in that lab all day, Gem. No more." Like Paige, Sage didn't understand the leader spot handed to Gem. She's a good warrior, but she hasn't been here long enough to understand this role.
Gem rolled her eyes, catching Paige sly stare. She looked overly upset, and she could feel the rage between the little Kill's inner beasts and old self. Maybe this could heal her. If she can fight back at what she did to herself.
"Gem," Hunter called out. It sent shivers down her spin, leaving her shaking for a moment. Sage looked down at her, what the actually f**k?
"I think you getting a cold, Gem." She trotted off, making sure everyone was still accounted for.
Gem held back her wolf's growl before turning her attention back to her mate, my fit mate.
"Do you think you can locate another herd of deer?" He asked, and the wolf inside Gem howled at her mate being dependent on her. "I'm sure everyone is hungry from the fifteen hour walk."
Gem nodded her head, her checks blushing at the smile forming on Hunter's face. Find mate some food!
She quickly dashed off, smelling the air for some type meat. When her nose spotted it, she ran off into the woods.
"Hunter," Paige nearly growled. "We don't need that tramp finding food. We are hunters."
Then, Paige was taken out by the agression of the mate bond. Her eyes widen as her brother quickly grabbed her to face him.
"Don't you ever call her a tramp, Paige. You understand?"
Don't talk that way about my blood. A voice snickered in the back of head. He doesn't seem to have the same agenda as you.
"Paige!" He yelled, catching people's watchful looks. He lowered his voice, "Understand?"
She looked up at her big brother, "Crystal clear." She pushed him off before stomping away. Hunter watch as she stomped away, feeling a bond inside him grow, but the blood between his sister and himself was thinning. He was about to call her, but footsteps behind him caught his ears.
"That looked like it was handle well." Sage has her arms crossed over her chest. Hunter sighed, understand what was happening next. Like his mother, Sage crossed her arms when she was ready to lecture something. It was always funny watching it happened, but it was terrible when it was directed at you.
Oh god. I'm dead.
"Sage," he mumbled, "not now."
Sage only smirked, "I'll have your guilt kill you before I do my part."
She briskly walked away. "By the way, everyone is here."
"Sage," Hunter voiced out. Sage paused slightly before turning around. "I," he sighed, "I don't know why." He rubbed his hands over his face. "I get this protective feeling over Gem, and-"
"You chose Gem over your sister."
"Sage, that's not true."
Sage only shook her head, bitting her lip. "You basically handed her this position, but with Paige, she had to work her way up." Sage gave off of a laugh. "I don't like that woman. If she is still in that position by tomorrow, I will do something."
She snapped her fingers before walking away, leaving Hunter standing in this thoughts. I'll have to talk to Gem. Something deep down inside him told him not to, so he started walking, he started to get away from everything.
