"Good morning, Mr. Sute. These are the files for today," I greeted as I entered his office. I placed the documents on his desk, but I couldn't quite see his face because it was hidden behind the paperwork he was reading.
Is this really how Mr. Sute's son reads? His face is almost pressed flat against the pages.
I shook my head to clear my mind of silly thoughts and opened my iPad to check his schedule.
"You have a meeting with Mrs. Sanchez at 1:00 in the afternoon, followed by another business meeting with Mr. Galvez at 3:00 PM," I informed him. Yet, he remained in the exact same position.
He didn't even bother to look at me!
Wow, he was quite the grumpy one.
"That's all for today, Sir. If you need anything else done, just call me by pressing zero on your telephone. That's my line in the office. Excuse me."
I turned my back on him and was about to take a step toward the door when I suddenly froze in my tracks. A very familiar voice called out to me, using a name that made my heart race.
"Darling."
Once the shock wore off, my eyes were still wide with disbelief as I turned around to face him. To my surprise, it really was him! It was Sutehan!
With a smirk on his face, his eyes swept over me before he pointed to the chair across from his desk, signaling me to sit down. I complied, even though the sheer shock hadn't left my face. I kept my eyes locked on him, half-expecting this to be a prank, wondering if the real son of Mr. Sute was actually just a friend of his.
"Let me formally introduce myself to you, Ms. Rui Megumi Aizu. I'm Sutehan Kuro Sute, your new and only Mr. Sute."
With that, he stood up and moved to the chair directly across from me. A sly, puppy-like grin played on his lips as he extended his hand. Feeling a bit annoyed, I accepted his hand and shook it.
"Dad was right. Being my secretary suits you—" He wasn't able to finish his sentence because my stomach suddenly let out a massive growl, a clear sign that the little monsters inside me were starving.
I bit my lower lip and quickly averted my gaze out of sheer embarrassment. Great, now he was going to think I didn't feed myself! I heard him stifling a laugh, which prompted me to shoot a sharp glare back at him. If looks could kill, he would have been dead right then and there.
"Haha! Sorry, my bad," he burst out, laughing completely.
Are you really that happy? What am I to you, your personal happy pill?
I just rolled my eyes at him and was about to speak when someone suddenly knocked on the office door.
I made a move to stand up, remembering my duty to serve the boss, but he beat me to it. When he opened the door, I saw a food delivery rider standing there.
Did he order food? well obviously.
"Thank you," he told the rider before closing the door again.
I followed him with my eyes as he walked straight toward his office dining area—an exclusive space custom-made just for him. According to his father, Sutehan hated going home when he was completely exhausted, so he had this office built complete with a dining area, a bedroom, and a living room with a TV. Talk about spoiled, right? His office layout felt exactly like a luxury condominium.
"Darling, let's eat. I already set the table and I know you're hungry," he said with a wink, peeking at me from the dining area.
I pouted and followed him like a tame little kitten. If I weren't so hungry, and if he hadn't heard that humiliating sound from my stomach, believe me, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near him!
"How are things with your boyfriend?" he asked, breaking the long silence as we ate.
"I mean, don't get me wrong. I just want to know if he treats you right," he quickly added when he noticed me just staring at him without answering.
I set my utensils down and dabbed my lips with a table napkin.
"We're good," I replied dryly. He simply nodded and took a sip of water, seemingly unconvinced but choosing to let it drop.
Months passed with that exact same routine. He would always invite me to have lunch with him, and sometimes he would even cook for me himself. I never read anything into it because he claimed it was part of my job to do whatever he, as my boss, wanted.
"You could just eat by yourself, you know. You're always feeding me," I snapped at him, irritated as he invited me once again to share lunch with him because he had cooked.
“As much as I wanted to, I'm just not used to eating alone, and I much prefer watching you eat in front of me," he pleaded, making me roll my eyes as I walked ahead into his office dining area.
"You're going to make me fat!" Because whenever the food on my plate was almost gone, he would just keep refilling it!
Was his plan to make my stomach explode?!
"Well, it's actually better if you gain some weight because look—you're so thin," he said seriously while dishing food onto my plate.
"You're so annoying, you know that?! Don't you know this is called being sexy?! Not thin!" I vented with a gritted whisper, taking a bite that made him narrow his eyes as he watched me before slowly nodding.
"Okay, if you say so! But you'd look better with a bit more flesh, and what looks best is—" I glared at him, causing him to look away and take a sip of water.
I hope you choke! He has so many cheesy lines up his sleeve!
Right now, I was at a bar with my best friend, Cheizeru. The crazy girl had practically dragged me here, throwing a tantrum because she claimed I didn't have time for her anymore. So here I was to make it up to her, joining her to splurge the night away at our favorite popular lounge.
"By the way, what’s the status between you and Vin? Didn't you just celebrate your seventh anniversary last month?" she asked.
We were inside a VIP room, so it wasn't overly loud. We planned on hitting the dance floor later once we had a bit of a buzz, just to unleash the moves of women who weren't chosen... despite having so much to offer.
"I think we're basically just housemates at this point," I answered casually before taking a sip of champagne. I watched her face sour at my response.
"Maybe you just don't give him enough attention, or maybe you've stopped sweet-talking him?" she questioned, leaning back against the sofa.
I shook my head. It was true. Ever since he ghosted me on the night of our seventh anniversary, I had completely woken up. I was no longer the gullible Rui Megumi Aizu he used to know. Although he was trying to make up for it now and was constantly apologizing, it was no use. I could no longer feel any sincerity from him.
"You know, Achii, I understand you because I've been in that kind of relationship before. It's really not healthy, especially since you've been living together for so long... yet there's still no ring," she said, her voice dropping lower, as if trying hard not to hurt my feelings.
I just gave her a bitter smile and held up my bare fingers—fingers completely devoid of any ring that would symbolize having a fiancé.
"Maybe he can't see me in his future. Or maybe I'm just not the woman he envisions as the mother of his children," I replied quietly.
Cheizeru nodded sadly.
"But seriously, nothing ever came out of the seven years you've spent living together in the same house?" she prodded curiously.
I took a drink before shaking my head slowly.
"I think that's a sign, Achii. A sign from God that he really isn't the one for you."
Because of what she said, I couldn't even keep up with the rest of her stories. Her words kept echoing in my ears over and over again. Maybe she was right. Maybe this really was God's sign for me to finally love myself... and leave Vin for good.
But how?
How could I leave someone who had been my home for so long?
Is it really possible for someone like me, who has been faithful for all those years, to love someone again without constantly thinking about Vin?
