Chapter 2: First Shift

2065 Words
Opal’s POV “You invited him? How could you?!” Emerald has been at this for hours since we got home, she didn’t like the idea of Castiel joining us for our first shift. He was a potential mate, how could I not? She looked like she knew why I did already, she was just agonizing about it to maybe lessen some stress. For some reason, she thinks he hates her. How could he though? I sat down the bed where she layed face down, not facing her but leaning my arms from my back looking at the ceiling where we placed numerous stars that would glow in the dark. A human invention, one of the very few we liked. “He likes you.” She froze for a second maybe to think of it, then she sighed. “There’s somethibg about that, that makes me doubt.” I chuckled. “Maybe your just too tense, you always do overthink a lot of things. Besides, we’ll know for sure the day after tomorrow. Aren’t you excited?” “I guess..” — fast forward day after tomorrow — “Don’t be too scared sweetheart, embrace it.” My mom winked as she tidied my hair a bit. We were currently at home with the whole fam. Emerald got ready a few minutes ago and was now waiting at the door. She didn’t look nervous but I knew deep down she was a bit scared. Some shifts can be unsuccessful afterall. And also... she was probably waiting for someone. Castiel still haven’t showed up. I bet she wanted to impress him, I did too. He is my mate, I’m sure of it. Both Emerald and I were in a white flowy dress, identical I might add. It was something easy to remove or rip apart. Mom prepared some of our clothes in a duffle bag, said we should be prepared for after we shift back. Since although wolves were comfortable with nudity we were still underaged women, gorgeous ones at that. “Anyways, what’s got Emerals so nervous as of late?” Dad whispered. I laughed at that and just grinned. “You’ll see father dearest, you’ll see.” Sapphire walked closer, wanting to join in on the whispers. “I think she looks extra pretty today, is she trying to impress someone?” She gave me a suspicious look. “Hmm, she really does look pretty does she?” I acted like I was thinking of it deeply, Sapphire scoffed while mom and dad laughed. “Really, how narcissistic of you.” -Ruby Emerald finally took notice from mom and dad’s laugh and walked closer to where we were. “What’s so funny? mind telling the birthday girl? or are you talking about me?” She said, her brows raised. “Don’t be so accusing Emerald, I was talking about the guy waiting outside.” -Ruby Emerald slightly shifted and looked out the window almost immediately she couldn’t make it any more obvious than it already was. How transparent. “Ha! I knew it! You guys are expecting someone! A guy! your mate!” Sapphire with her overly accusing tone. “Gee thanks for spelling it out.” -Ruby said dryly. “Do I know this man?” -Dad “Oh come now darling, don’t be too strict.” -Mom holding dad’s arm. “Shouldn’t we be going now?” - Emerald “Yes, it’s almost midnight. Run along now Emerald, Opal, be careful on your way.” Emerald and I decided to shift outside, we wanted to try walking or maybe running around in our wolf form. “Yes, yes. We’re going. Love you guys!” Emerald greeted them to before we went out of the house. We decided to walk towards the middle of the forest behind our house, there was an open area where we could see the full moon clearly. Emerald was silent and tense so I held her hand and gave her a smile before pulling her with me to where we were supposed to be. “I don’t think he’s coming.” - Emerald “It’s 11:45, he’ll make it don’t worry.” I was glancing back at the watch a while back and as I estimate he should be able to make it if he came around five to eight minutes later. Castiel said he’d come just before we shift. He also said he was looking forward to it. I told him where we would be on midnight so I sure he’ll make it. I was feeling giddy and excited, it was refreshing. I held Emerald’s hands tighter. I know she was worried, I could feel it. “He’ll be there.” “....” - Emerald “Do you think he’s your mate?” -Emerald “Ours, I can feel it.” Castiel’s POV I was near the twins house just behind it in the forest, Opal said they’d be there before midnight. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited. The moment I walked in that cafe two days ago I realised it was them, my mates, Opal and Emerald Gem. I was topless and holding my shirt so it was easy for me to climb a tree somewhere near the opened area in the middle of the forest. It took a few minutes before I heard their voices, my heartbeat faster than normal and I smelled the sweetest smell. Looking down I saw two goddesses walking towards the middle of the negative space. Both looked too stunning in their identical dresses. They were looking around and that’s when I jumped off. They looked at me almost immediately, Opal was smiling while Emerald looked away obviously blushing. Cute. I tried so hard to hold myself back. Self control wasn’t so easy. “You made it!” Opal ran to me and hugged me, I hugged her back and showed her my dimples as I smiled. I looked at Emerald who was still looking away from me. I half expected her to do the same but who could blame her? I was purposely trying to draw back from her. That made me want to laugh. “Good luck on your first shift.” Opal gave me her sweetest smile that made my heart skip a beat. I wanted to fight the urge to look at Emerald but she was my mate nonetheless so I did while my arms were still draped around Opal’s waist. She was looking at us and I got the feeling she also wanted a hug. Instead I gave her a cold smile, the warmest I could muster- that way it wouldn’t be too obvious I didn’t want to give her a hug. That looked like it did the trick. She coughed a bit and looked me in the eyes which surprised me a lot. Don’t f*****g skip a beat, d**n it. “Thanks for coming, it’s almost midnight.” I smiled at that. She really didn’t want to look bad infront of anyone even though she was already uncomfortable. “Of course, I wouldn’t miss it.” I gave her a mocking smile, Opal couldn’t see my face since she was hugging me. That startled Emerald, what I said, she probably caught on. I expected her to shy away even more like she always does ever since I saw her two says ago but instead she raised her brows and frowned at me. “Yes, well... do you mind looking away? I’m not comfortable with strangers eyeing me and my twin shift.” Feisty... as always. “Emerald! that’s—!” Opal complained but I cut her off with a sweet smile. “No it’s okay I understand. I’ll be by the side till you’re done.” I held her chin making her face up so I could look at her face better before I kissed her forehead. She seemed shocked but accepted it either way. I knew she was confused as to why I only kissed her when I began to walk towards the side. I could feel both of them stare at my back. One confused the other annoyed. 11:58. I could hear shuffling and bones cracking but I didn’t look. I always wanted to see their first shift but I guess I still wouldn’t be able to see it in this life. Better luck nex time. A few minutes later and it was silent. The cracking and the tiny moans of pain were kept quiet. I stayed still for a few minutes before taking a look. And just as before, two dark reddish brown identical looking wolves with one wolf a bit larger than the other. Unknown’s POV *gasp!* I woke up sweating from my sleep. It was still dark outside and here I was panting. I grunted and held my forehead in an attempt to calm down the throbbing and unbearable pain. It’s been a while since I had such strong premonitions. It was of a woman with long dark brown hair, she wore a suit with Avalon’s crest. Different species were in rampage against one another. A very grim and eerie atmosphere full of bloodshed. A war. I didn’t wait till I calmed down and stood from my bed, running towards the window in my room and opening it’s curtains. It was a full moon and it was midnight. A transformation. But what of? Full moons can mean a lot of things, differently among each and every species. A completion? to gain balance? good luck? Or do wars that lead to bloodshed also bring union? Either way, this is something that should be addressed immediately. Emerald’s POV Despite being scared I stood facing Opal and my back facing Castiel. The full moon shined brightly above us and that’s when I felt my bones slowly c***k and reform to different angles and sizes. I didn’t have the time to look at how Opal was doing. It was painful. Even more so emotionally for me. It took us more than 2 minutes to finish. By then we were both on all fours, our entire body covered in fur. Opal looked dignified, so so did I. ‘Hello!’ The unfamiliar voice in my head surprised me so much that I flinched. I looked around but no one but us three were there. It was when I realised it was my wolf. ‘Hello.’ I answered back. Opal’s POV I smiled at Emerald feeling excited about our first shift, but I guess she hardly noticed so I looked at Castiel instead. He also had that excited glint in his eyes along with his signature goofy like grin, he looked cool. Then he turned around. When the full moon was directly above us I flinched feeling my bones slowly c***k and reform into that of a wolf’s anatomy. I hardly had the time to look at anything. I was physically in pain and I didn’t know how long that took but when I came to I was on all fours with fur all over my body and suddenly my hearing, smell, and vision seemed as though it were heightened. ‘Greetings my human.’ I took a step back shocked at the unfamiliar voice I heard. I wasn’t sure where it came from and i couldn’t sense anyone else in the forest. Wait, my human? ‘Don’t be scared, I am your wolf. You can call me however you like.’ I was shocked and excited and maybe a little more calm than before, but a little. ‘Yes! greetings!’ I answered back a little unsure wondering if all wolves spoke so ancient. I hardly had the time to think of it any further when my wolf yelped. ‘Mate!’ Castiel’s POV Both wolves looked at me, their eyes glazed over indicating they were talking to their wolves. Suddenly they came running towards me and pounced at me tackling me to the ground and licking my face or nuzzling my cheek and neck. All I could do was chuckle in delight. Goddess how much I missed this. I could feel my wolf agree. ‘Opal, Emerald.’ I mind linked to both of them. This was only after a few minutes of practically grooming me in their wolf forms. I smiled at them sweetly, caught in the moment I called out. ‘My mates.’
