Khyron’s POV
The office was silent except for the scratching of my pen as I signed off on border patrol reports.
Kael prowled at the edge of my mind, restless.
"You are too calm, Khyron," Kael rumbled. "Something feels off today."
“Everything feels off to you,” I muttered.
"Not like this."
Before I could respond, the door opened. Jarek, my Beta and oldest friend, stepped in with a grim expression.
“Talk,” I said, setting my pen down.
Jarek crossed the room and placed a file on my desk. “Border patrol dealt with two trespassers last night. Rogues. One escaped.”
“Nothing unusual there,” I replied evenly.
Jarek gave a short nod. “Except they also found a human girl on our land.”
That made me look up.
Kael growled. "A human? That makes no sense."
“Are you sure she is human?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
“She smells human,” Jarek said carefully. “But packs have been attacked for months now. Rogues are moving in ways we have never seen before. It could be a trap. Someone masking their scent.”
I rose to my feet, towering over the desk. The air in the room seemed to drop several degrees.
“Where is she now?”
“Infirmary. Under watch.”
“Double the guards,” I ordered. “I want her examined thoroughly before I step foot in that room. Scent, blood, everything. If this is a ploy, we end it before it reaches the pack house.”
Jarek inclined his head. “Gamma Riven and Warrior Tomas were the ones who pulled her out. They are watching her now.”
My expression did not soften. “Good. Have Riven report directly to me.”
Kael rumbled in approval. "We should see her ourselves, Khyron."
“Not yet,” I answered him. “If she is a danger, I want to know before I get close enough to regret it.”
But even as I said the words, something twisted in my chest. A pull I could not name.
Kael noticed. "You felt that too."
I ignored him, snatching up my jacket. “Prepare the warriors. If this girl is not what she seems, the entire pack will be ready.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Jarek said, falling in step behind me.
Whoever this human was, she had just placed herself in the heart of BloodMoon territory. And I was going to find out why.
