Chapter 3

Kael I stared at my mate’s limp body lying on the bed as the pack doctor checked her vitals. My anger simmered as my eyes roamed over the bruises on her skin and the fresh wound on her head, a painful reminder of her suffering. Alpha Lucas and his father, now fully awake, stood silently, watching me for a reaction. When I snapped my head toward them, they tensed under my glare. I said nothing, keeping my emotions locked away as always. “She’ll survive,” the pack doctor said flatly, his tone as cold as his expression. “Her pulse is stable, but her injuries are severe. She’ll likely be unconscious for days.” Without another word, he exited the room. “What’s her name?” I asked, forcing my voice to remain calm even as fury burned beneath the surface. My gaze returned to her frail form, lying motionless on the bed. I didn’t understand the pull I felt toward her, this strange connection I’d never experienced before. Shadow, my wolf, growled in the back of my mind, eager to claim her as ours. I ignored him, determined to remain rational. “Allison,” Alpha Lucas finally responded. I hummed in acknowledgment, shifting my attention back to them. Aiden, my Beta, stood silently beside me. He didn’t ask, but I could tell he already knew the truth—she was my mate. “Why is a human here, and why does she have injuries even a werewolf would struggle to heal from?” I asked evenly, though the tension in my voice was palpable. “This is pack business!” the former Alpha growled, his hostility evident. My lips twitched into a dark smile as I rose from my chair and advanced toward him. He backed away instinctively, fear flashing in his eyes. “The next time you raise your voice at me,” I said coldly, my tone sharp as ice, “I’ll ensure you don’t live to regret it.” He swallowed hard and quickly nodded, his defiance crumbling. Satisfied with his reaction, I returned to my chair. “Now, are you going to talk, or do I need to force the answers out of you?” I asked, my voice dangerously low. Alpha Lucas stepped in before his father could speak. “She’s my sister,” he admitted, his tone laced with distaste. I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Your sister?” “Yes, Alpha. She’s my daughter,” the former Alpha interjected, his voice bitter. “Born to me by the late Luna.” A human born of werewolf parents? The notion was unheard of, an abomination in our world. Humans were already considered beneath us—what greater disgrace than to give birth to one? “How is it I’ve never heard of her?” I asked. “Because I don’t consider her my daughter. She’s weak,” he spat venomously. My gaze returned to the woman on the bed. Weak? Perhaps. But she was alive despite wounds that would have killed others. That kind of strength couldn’t be ignored. Still, she was human, and I couldn’t afford to show weakness by becoming involved with her. Standing once more, I approached the former Alpha. Aiden shadowed me closely. “I doubt you’d survive wounds like hers if I inflicted them on you now,” I said mockingly. He flinched, his cowardice amusing me. Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heel and left the pack house, stopping only to settle her medical bills. I doubted they’d treat her properly otherwise. To them, she was nothing more than a burden. “She’s your mate, isn’t she?” Aiden asked quietly as he drove us out of town. “Yes,” I admitted, leaning back in my seat. “What are you going to do about it?” he pressed. “Nothing.” The word came out sharp, laced with irritation. “She doesn’t know we’re mates, and that’s for the best. I don’t need a mate—especially not a fragile human who would break under my touch.” “But—” “Enough, Aiden.” My voice dropped to a growl. “Not a word of this to anyone. Especially Aria.” Aria was my woman as she tend to tag herself and I allowed it. She was the only would withstand my aggressive which was why I kept her with me. She was all I needed. “Yes, Alpha,” he replied quickly, focusing on the road. I turned my gaze to the window, my mind drifting to the fragile woman I’d just met. Against my better judgment, I couldn’t seem to stop thinking about her.
