Chapter 3

He really is tall. He grabbed me from behind and dragged me straight to the elevator. Having just messed up, I didn't dare say a single word. It wasn't until we left the building and stood in front of the massive flower bed out front that he raised an eyebrow at me, looking completely ready to settle the score. "You seriously can't recognize me?" I shook my head like a bobblehead. "It's a misunderstanding, totally a misunderstanding!" 'You're my 1.5-million-dollar meal ticket. If I can't recognize you, nobody else gets to.' "A misunderstanding?" he scoffed. "I was standing right next to you, but you ignored me completely and ran off to call some other guy your boyfriend. Looks like the money I spent this morning was a total waste." "No way, I just didn't see you! That guy's back looked just like yours, but his face is definitely nowhere near as handsome as yours," I lied through my teeth, trying my hardest to sound convincing. The guy just laughed in pure frustration. He ripped off his name tag and slapped it right onto my forehead. "Remember this: your boyfriend's name is Brent Williams. Every time you get it wrong, that's a 10,000-dollar deduction from your allowance." "Yes, sir! I'll engrave your name deep in my soul! I won't sleep until I've repeated it 300 times a day!" Brent's lips curled into a satisfied smirk. Then he lifted the ID badge hanging on my chest to check it. "Evelyn Davis, right? I'll remember that. So, what do you want to eat tonight?" "I'm not picky at all! Babe, whatever you like, I'm in!" I gushed. Brent pointed to a burger joint across the street. "Want to grab a burger?" Damn, for such a handsome guy, he had surprisingly down-to-earth taste. "Let's do it!" I had to match his vibe perfectly. And that's how we ended up at Jake's Diner. I thought I'd landed a billionaire boyfriend and that tonight would be a fancy night out, starting with a Michelin-starred restaurant. Instead, here we were right across from the office, staring at two juicy cheeseburgers and a basket of fries. I was quietly picking the onions off my burger, lost in thought, when Brent suddenly reached over, took my plate, and slid his own in front of me. "I don't eat onions or pickles," he said before taking a big bite of my burger. I immediately opened my notes app and typed that down. "What are you doing?" Brent Williams asked, looking up curiously. I turned the screen to show him my list. He glanced over it. Girlfriend Notes: Rule 1: Recite your boyfriend's name 300 times every single day. Otherwise, allowance gets docked. Rule 2: Boyfriend doesn't eat onions or pickles. Remove them first. Otherwise, the allowance may get docked. "Pfft!" Brent clamped a hand over his mouth, his burger still in his other hand, and burst out laughing. "Wait, are you actually that scared of me docking your pay? You had to write that at the end of every rule?" I quickly poured him a glass of water and handed it over. "Hey, since I'm taking your money, I've gotta give you 120% service. Otherwise, holding onto all this cash makes me anxious." "Good attitude. Very well-behaved." Brent reached over, tipped my baseball cap back, and gave the top of my head a gentle pat. He seemed to like it, because he did it several times in a row. With every pat, I was just counting dollar signs in my head. Brent ate fast, finishing his burger in no time. He stood up and said, "I'm going next door to grab a pack of cigarettes. Take your time." "Sounds good." I went right back to my burger. To be honest, it was my first time trying one from this place. One bite in, and I immediately understood why it was so popular. The juicy patty, the melted cheese, the perfectly toasted bun, I was already hooked. Suddenly, a heavy wave of perfume drifted over, and someone slid into the seat across from me. I looked up, ready to say the seat was taken, when I saw it was Miss Curvy. She pinched her nose, waving her hand in disgust. "Brent brought you here to eat?" "Yep." She scanned me from head to toe and said coldly, "When Brent was with me, we ate at fancy restaurants every night. Now that it's you, you're stuck eating cheap burgers. Doesn't that tell you exactly where you stand?" 'Duh. It's a business arrangement.' Miss Curvy sneered, "We're both women here, so drop the act. I know exactly what you're doing. You're only with Brent for his money, aren't you?" "Exactly. What else would it be for?" She choked on her words, completely stunned by how honest I was. For a second, she didn't know what to say next. "For money, you'd throw yourself at a stranger? Do you have no standards at all?" I looked at her, genuinely confused. "Wait, do you hear yourself? Are standards really supposed to matter more than cash?"
