Miss Curvy's face turned ashen. She stared at me for a long time before finally squeezing out two loud words.
"You're shameless!"
Hey, look at her throwing around compliments.
"Who are you calling shameless?" A familiar voice sounded right beside her. Brent was back.
I immediately turned on the waterworks, putting on the most pitiful expression I could muster while grabbing a corner of Brent's shirt.
"Babe, don't be angry. Even though she's calling me shameless, I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it."
Look at this top-tier acting. I can switch from a manipulative drama queen to a helpless victim with absolute ease.
Five hundred thousand dollars a month is worth every single penny.
Right on cue, Brent played along, looking completely protective.
He glared at Miss Curvy and said, "Get lost, you're taking my seat." As he spoke, he pulled me into his arms and gently comforted me. "Don't be sad, Evie. Let your man handle this for you."
"Mm-hmm."
Feeling totally "wronged," I buried my face in Brent's chest and wiped a bit of burger grease onto his shirt. I had noticed earlier that this guy had abs, and touching him now confirmed he was packing a solid six-pack.
Brent's entire body stiffened for a second, but then he slowly relaxed.
Oh? He's actually kinda innocent.
"Brent, did you really buy her a Panamera?" Miss Curvy demanded furiously.
There was no need for my sponsor to even reply. I looked up and flashed her a shy, toxic-sweet smile.
"Thank you so much for dumping him. Otherwise, how would I ever get the chance to drive a luxury car? Next time, the meal is on me."
"You..." Miss Curvy stomped her foot in pure rage, threw out a final "You people are psycho!" and ran away completely heartbroken.
"Have you hugged me long enough?" Brent asked, ruffling my hair from above.
He could obviously tell I was putting on a show, but he had totally rolled with it.
I chuckled and let go of his shirt, watching him sit down across from me.
I couldn't suppress my restless curiosity anymore.
"Babe, what exactly did she do to you?"
Brent poured himself a glass of plain water and said calmly, "Back then, she saw I had money and made the first move. After we got together, she found new ways to ask for gifts every single day. LV today, Hermès the next. She even had the nerve to ask me for a car within the first month. Honestly, a car doesn't cost that much, but my funds ran into a temporary hitch.
"I casually told her I might go bankrupt just to test her, and she took it seriously, giving me an attitude ever since. This wasn't the first time she made a scene. I've got a temper too. If someone treats me like a sucker, I just cut them loose. After all, I never really liked her that much anyway."
I barely absorbed a word he said, my brain only registering Blah blah blah... a car doesn't cost much... blah blah blah...
"Evelyn, wipe your drool."
I snapped back to reality and quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe my mouth.
Wait, he lied to me! There was no drool!
But whatever, this is what people call flirting.
"So she was basically using you as an ATM? How could you even stand that?" I said, instantly forming a united front against the enemy.
Brent looked up at me, half-smiling. "Yeah, I decided I'm not holding back anymore. From now on, I'd rather just find someone who openly uses me as an ATM. At least the customer service is actually decent."
"Of course, babe! Serving the boss is my absolute calling in life," I said, patting my chest with pure passion.
"What did you just call me?"
"Babe!"
Brent took a sip of water, looking incredibly satisfied. He glanced at me and tossed out a massive fry.
"Keep up the good work. If your performance stays this good, a contract renewal won't be a problem."
Oh? There's a subscription renewal option? Now I was really hyped!
I've always been a girl of my word. Since I promised to perform well, I went all out.
For the next month, I sent him a cute good morning text the second I woke up and a good night text before bed. We stayed in touch throughout the day without any gaps, and if he called at night, I picked up on the very first ring. Three meals a day, I checked in on him without fail.
Every single day, I practically lived on the 22nd floor just to see him. Sometimes I brought breakfast or afternoon tea to his desk, and other times I just waited around to grab lunch or dinner together.
The amount of time we spent glued to each other was almost longer than the time I spent sleeping.
Gradually, I figured out his exact preferences. For instance, he loves bubble tea, and he likes it pretty sweet.
Around dusk, holding a cold soda, I was waiting for Brent yet again. The employees on the 22nd floor were wrapping up for the day, and whenever they saw me, they routinely teased me.
"Look, the girl from the 20th floor is waiting for Brent again."
"Why does she look a little heavier than last time?"
I rolled my eyes. Can you really blame me? Who told Brent to take me out for massive feasts every single day? Who could resist a table full of gourmet food?
"Evelyn, are you waiting for Brent?" A gentle voice suddenly spoke up beside me.
I turned around, feeling like the guy looked kind of familiar.
Oh! It was that guy, Ian.
Because I had accidentally mistaken him for my fake boyfriend last time, I was now low-key famous on the 22nd floor.
"Yeah," I nodded.
Remembering how much trouble I'd caused him during that incident, I took the initiative to apologize.
"Sorry about last time. I totally mistook you for someone else."
"It's not your fault. Just looking at our backs, a lot of people mistake me for Brent," Ian smiled.
Oh wow, he spoke so softly, and every sentence came with a warm smile. If I weren't currently so loyal to Brent's bank account, this guy would definitely be my type. What a shame.
"Evie, Brent is stuck in a meeting. He might not be out anytime soon. If your legs are tired, you can wait inside the office. There are still a few people working overtime," Ian said, giving my shoulder a friendly pat.
"It's okay, I'm not tired. I'll just wait right here for him."
I wasn't about to go sit awkwardly in another department.
Ian and I kept chatting casually, but my mind began to wander. I started thinking that if Brent suddenly walked out and witnessed this, it would look exactly like one of those dramatic, cliché misunderstanding scenes from a TV show.
The very second that thought crossed my mind, a heavily jealous voice rang out.
"Babe, did you mistake someone else for your boyfriend again?"
Oh, man. Talk about a woman's crazy sixth sense.
