Chapter 5Yet again, Joshua awoke at first light in Frank’s bed. Too early to leave but too late to sleep on, he thought. He looked at the still figure beside him, his face peaceful in repose. On impulse, Joshua left the bed, not only to grab his breeches but for some paper and charcoal. Returning to a bedside chair, he sketched quickly and confidently, catching this private moment. When awake, Frank seemed to wear a mask redolent of cynical sophistication. He was always so occupied with affairs of state weighing heavy on his broad shoulders that to catch him looking so relaxed, his expression at ease, was a rare chance.
