Chapter 6

In less than ten minutes, Arthur was at her side, still dressed in that very outfit. Scarlett slowly closed the distance between them. Arthur cupped her face in his hands, his damp lips coming to rest on the corner of her mouth before quickly deepening the kiss, claiming her bit by bit. The soft, broken whimpers that escaped Scarlett in her panic only added to the charged atmosphere between them. When the kiss ended, he buried his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in her scent greedily. "Anything you want, I'll give it to you. Come away with me, Scarlett." She paused, then suddenly smiled, lifting her hand to wave it in front of him. "My nails were done just last week, and they cost five grand. Eric changes my ring once a month; each one costs no less than five million. For our wedding anniversary, he gave me an entire mine. Can you afford to support me? I don't do a life without money." Not a flicker of embarrassment crossed Arthur's eyes. "Do you think I can't measure up to your husband?" 'Far from being unable to compare, you're worlds apart,' Scarlett thought. The Harris Family was a century-old dynasty. Whomever Eric married, it would always be beneath his station. The reason he had married her in the first place, aside from the love he'd had for her back then, was that she was the most suitable candidate to be Mrs. Harris and maintain the family's polished public image. Scarlett's mother was born into Javilia's elite society and moved to Havenbrook's upper circle after marriage, where she gave birth to Scarlett. Therefore, Scarlett had been raised in the lap of luxury, wanting for nothing. Yet just as Scarlett reached adulthood, her parents passed away from illness one after another, and the entire family fortune was carved up and seized by others. It was right at that time that Eric began to court her, restoring her upper-class lifestyle and keeping her in the comfort she was used to. She had never once imagined living a life without money. Even now that she had decided to divorce Eric, she was determined to get enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life. Scarlett did not want to continue this topic and leaned in to kiss the corner of his mouth. "Whether you're better than him or not, I'll have to test it out for myself." They tangled together all night long, completely lost in their lustful indulgence. Early the next morning, Scarlett finally let him leave. Before he left, she transferred a sum of money to him. "Get yourself a decent outfit. In a few days, you'll come with me to a charity banquet." Arthur raised an eyebrow; she could not parse the deep meaning in his eyes. "I'll never embarrass you." After seeing him off, Scarlett finally felt how utterly exhausted her body was. Scarlett slept for the whole day. When evening came, the house was still cold and quiet, showing no sign that Eric had ever returned. She pulled up her chat with her lawyer. The lawyer said the agreement was already prepared and asked when she wanted it delivered. "Send it now." With how things stood between her and Eric now, getting divorced a day earlier or a day later made no difference at all. The only unexpected twist was Cassie. Cassie called her. Gone was the panic she had shown the previous night; she spoke in a half-smug, half-threatening tone. "Let's talk. Think about it—if Eric found out another man was at his place last night, and what you did there... See you at Intelligentsia Coffee in half an hour." Intelligentsia Coffee was not too far from where Scarlett lived. When Scarlett arrived, Cassie was already sitting there, cool and self-assured, and cut straight to the point. "I have photos of that man entering and leaving the manor." Scarlett chuckled. She took a sip of coffee and said, "How do you plan to punish me, to get revenge for the humiliation you suffered yesterday?" "Eric hates being betrayed more than anything. You're asking for trouble! Now, I'm merciful enough to offer you a way out. Whether you want to hear it and take it is completely up to you." Scarlett had already guessed what Cassie was planning. But she just hadn't anticipated the threat being laid quite so bare. Scarlett absently stroked the wedding ring on her finger. "What exactly are you trying to say?" Cassie lifted her chin arrogantly. "There is only one thing I want: you get a divorce, or you will end up horribly." After saying this, she laughed wildly, as though the position of Mrs. Harris was already within her grasp. Scarlett took another sip of coffee and said, "Fine. Go ahead and tell him." Cassie froze. "You think I wouldn't dare?" Scarlett did not say anything. She pulled a document out of her bag and slowly pushed it across the table to Cassie. Cassie glanced at it, immediately picked it up, and after flipping through it carefully, spotted Scarlett's signature. "What is this?" "Eric and I don't see each other very often. I won't get a chance to bring this up to him until we meet next time." Scarlett put on a look of distress. "What am I supposed to do, huh?" Cassie clutched the paper tightly and forced herself to stay calm. "I'll see Eric tonight. I can..." Scarlett tugged a faint smile. "Miss Scott, your happiness is yours to claim." Cassie glanced at Scarlett, then strode away with the divorce agreement in hand. She couldn't tell if this was just Scarlett playing hard to get or if she had some other motive, but the divorce papers were undeniably real. And this was her only shot.
