Chapter 38Steve “C’mon,” Adam said again. When I tried to get up off the couch, my legs went so weak, they buckled underneath me. Fortunately, Adam reached out and caught me, stopping me from falling across his coffee table. “I’ve got you,” he whispered as he lifted me up. He carried me, bridal style, out to his Highlander. After he’d put me in the passenger seat and fastened the seatbelt across me, he rushed around to the driver’s side. It seemed like the engine was already starting up as he jumped in behind the wheel. There was a harsh bump when he backed out onto the road and took off. God, it felt like we were going way too fast for such tiny roads in a small, rural town.
