The gymnasium glowed with lights strung across the ceiling, paper stars dangling above as if the universe had come closer just for them. A soft instrumental ballad echoed from the speakers, and students in suits and gowns swayed together like waves in a calm sea.
Zayn stood near the back, his breath catching in his throat.
“Still hiding?” Maia asked, popping up beside him in a sleek black suit and Rue’s corsage pinned proudly to her lapel.
Zayn laughed softly. “Just thinking.”
“About him?” she teased.
Zayn didn’t answer. He didn’t need to.
Maia squeezed his hand gently before returning to the dance floor where kai waited, spinning slowly under the lights like a dream made real.
And then Zayn saw him.
Teo.
Wearing a deep blue velvet blazer, curls tousled, and eyes locked only on him.
They met in the center of the room, the crowd melting away as if the night was theirs alone.
“You came,” Teo said.
“Of course I did.”
They didn’t speak for a moment. They just stood there, the lights catching the glimmer in their eyes.
Teo took Zayn’s hand. “Dance with me again?”
“Always.”
This time, there was music. But they barely heard it. They swayed gently, Zayn’s head resting on Teo’s shoulder, their hands clasped tightly like an unspoken promise.
“You changed my life,” Zayn whispered.
Teo smiled. “You saved mine.”
Just then, the song faded into something slower, something deeper. A hush fell over the crowd as couples leaned closer. But Zayn and Teo didn’t notice.
All they saw was each other.

After the dance, they sat on the steps outside the gym, heels discarded, ties loosened.
Teo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small note, folded with care.
“What’s this?” Zayn asked.
“A promise.”
Zayn unfolded it slowly, his hands trembling.
> I don’t care where we go after this.
Or who we become.
Just don’t forget that behind every smile I wear…
your name is still written there.
— Teo
Zayn’s vision blurred. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Yes, you do,” Teo said, pulling him into a kiss that was soft, full of gratitude, and everything unsaid.

Later that night, under the stars, they carved their initials into the rooftop railing where it all began:
T + Z
And just like that, they closed the final chapter of high school…
…but not of them.
Never of them.
