When the devil loves to play jokes

Kai’s POV: I rolled on the bed, yawning as I opened my eyes to see an empty room. I looked around and realized the stranger must have left. Last night memories flashed in my mind, and I giggled. The handsome stranger had swept me off my feet, and I found myself forgetting about Maverick. “That was a great night,” I mumbled, reaching for my phone. There were several missed calls from Maverick and Isabelle, but I ignored them. I screamed as my eyes caught the time on my phone. “Oh my God, I'm late!” I gasped. I was in the bathroom in a flash and out the next minute. I had less than an hour to my interview and I wasn't ready to miss it. I cleaned my body quickly and brushed my hair in a few minutes before hurriedly wearing my clothes. Then, I grabbed my bag and phone and ran out of the room immediately. I ran to the receptionist typing on her computer. “Um, hi. I need to check out, please,” I said, feeling out of breath. “Okay, what's your room number?” She asked, and I handed her the key with the number on it. “Alright, room 2041,” she said and typed into her computer smiling warmly. I was dying of impatience, and she lifted her head. “Your bill has already been cleared,” she said. “Really?” I asked in surprise, raising an eyebrow. “By whom?” “The man you were with,” she responded, looking at me like I had grown horns, and I remembered it wasn't even my room in the first place. “Oh, right. Thanks,” I said and hurried out in embarrassment. She was going to think I was a hooker. I would mentally beat myself up later, but now I needed to change and get to the interview. I quickly hailed a can and gave him my address. I paid the driver once he got to my house and rushed into the compound, running as if my life depended on it, scaring a few neighbors until I opened my door. Once I was in my apartment, I raced to my room, throwing any formal clothes in my wardrobe on the bed and hurriedly changed into the first one my hands touched. Once I was done, I checked my phone and screamed again. “Aaah!” Then I grabbed my purse and left, locking my door and running down the hall and into the elevator with the neighbors watching. “She's gone mad!” I heard one say as I breezed past her. “Hey, watch where you're going!” Another yelled. “Sorry,” I apologized, out of breath and ran out of the compound. I was lucky to get another taxi immediately and quickly told the driver the location. “Wellesley Enterprise.” “Got it,” he responded. “Um, I'm sorry, but I have an interview, and I'm late. Could you please hurry, even if it's a tiny bit,” I begged, and he smiled. “Sure thing, Miss,” he said driving off. I felt nervous and swallowed as I got out of the cab and paid the driver, facing the company. I sighed and walked into the lobby approaching the receptionist. “Hi,” I greeted. “Hello,” she responded casually. “I'm here for the job interview. I have an appointment,” I said, trying to sound confident. She smiled and checked her computer while I kept blowing small airs from my lips. “Ah, yes. You must be Kaidara Langley,” she said. I nodded. “Yes,” I responded. “You're right on time. Please, follow me,” she said warmly and I followed her to the interview room. My heartbeat was faster as I walked in, and she left. I noticed two interviewees were seated, and the third chair was vacant. The first interviewer was an older woman with a happy face and a bald young man looking great in his suit. The older woman gestured for me to sit. “Please, have a seat,” she said. “Thank you,” I replied and sat. Just then, the door opened and someone walked in. I slowly raised my head when the figure sat in the free seat in the middle, and I was shocked. “What the hell was he doing here?” My mind raced. Facing me was the handsome stranger from last night. My eyes widened in shock, and I blinked, trying to avoid his gaze, but he remained expressionless. I suddenly felt my breath seize. “Oh no, not today,” I prayed silently. “Let's begin,” he said and his deep voice reminded me of his thrust the night before. I gulped and tried to focus. I couldn't afford to lose this job. The pay was good and all I needed to do was act like he was someone else. Except it was hard. He was sitting right in front of me. My heart was racing as he stared at me. I quickly disguised not wanting to give myself away, trying so hard not to take sneaking glances at him. He briefly turned his gaze to the file in front of him and back to me. “Tell us why you are here?” He asked. “Miss Kaidara Langley.” My legs throbbled when he called my name and I felt myself reaching cloud nine. “Come on, Kai. Concentrate,” My brain warned. I answered calmly, surprisingly without stuttering. As the questions went on, I replied confidently. “That's great, Miss Kai. I think you would do great as a fine collection to our team,” the older woman spoke, making me smile. The bald man nodded in agreement, but the stranger remained expressionless. I gulped, waiting for his reply. I felt he was the leader; without his approval, I was toast. “You're hired,” he finally spoke and I smiled. Deep down, I wanted to scream in joy. It seemed it was my lucky day because I had heard a lot of people say they got the job a few days after waiting and if it ever came so early. It was likely to be thrash, so I had to keep my fingers crossed, considering I had spent hours browsing the internet about this company. I had some faith in it. What he said next shocked me. “You'll be the CEO's secretary. You're expected to resume immediately,” he said coldly. “W…what? Now?” I stuttered. He didn't say a word and I tried to speak but the words got stuck in my throat. I watched him rise from his seat and leave the room. “I'll leave you to settle in,” the older woman said. “What in the blazing world of surprises was going on here?” I thought as I stared at the remaining two.
