Kai’s POV:
I nodded, embarrassed and wondering if I hadn't just been scammed. I rose from my seat and left the room, smoothing my dress after I closed the door behind me.
I knew I would get lost if I tried to act clever, so I returned to the receptionist for directions. She was helpful, and I was able to get to the elevator in no time.
Once I was alone in the elevator, I slapped my cheek. “Ouch,” I groaned.
“Kai, you are in big trouble. Your one-night stand works in the same company as you; worse, he interviewed you. What if you had fumbled? Good gracious!” I blabbered.
“This was not the way I thought my day would start!” I complained. At this point, I bet my guardian angel was tired of me.
“It was a good thing he acted like he didn't know me,” I murmured, biting the tip of my fingernails.
“Was it?” I asked myself.
“Argh,” I groaned, pacing in the elevator and only stopped when the doors opened, revealing a clear hallway.
I stepped out of the elevator, took a deep breath, let it out, and began walking towards my office like I hadn't been going crazy a few seconds earlier in the elevator.
My office was a bit open and faced the CEO's. I could see it from my end. I dropped my bag on the table and stared at the large desk with scattered files.
“Ugh,” I groaned. “I can't wait to start.”
I sat down and started reading the instructions manual, taking the time to memorize every word. At the end my salary was confirmed on the paper and I gawked. It was pretty huge for someone like me, who had never seen such cash in my life.
“So, the internet wasn't lying,” I said, smiling.
“Alright, work hit me with your best. I can handle it,” I bragged.
Just when I was settling in, a young blonde woman walked in. Her hair was shoulder length, unlike my wavy red hair, which was long and reached my bum.
“Ooh, nice. So, you're the new secretary,” she said, catching my attention.
“Hi,” I chirped.
“I can see why you got the job,” she continued.
“Excuse me?” I asked, dumbfounded, not understanding her words.
“You're pretty,” she said, smiling, but the tone of her voice felt fake.
“Oh, thank you. But I didn't get the job because of how I look,” I lectured.
“Hmm, I doubt that,” she replied. I knew she was going to be a problem right away.
“Anyways, I'm Emily. I'll be showing you the ropes around here,” she said proudly, and I so badly wanted to cut her annoying voice off.
“Thank you. I doubt I'll be needing it,” I said, returning her fake smile. She immediately shut up and frowned.
She dropped a stack of files on my desk. “Those need to be edited, proofread and typed before the end of today,” he said. He turned to leave but stopped.
“And, yes. I almost forgot. You have to type them too. The boss wants them sent to his email today,” she said, and I stared in horror at the monstrous files on my table.
“I'm sure you can handle it,” she said smiling and walked out.
“I'm sure you can handle it,” I mimicked in a baby voice and scoffed.
“Annoying raccoon,” I cussed and rubbed my temples sighing. This was going to be a very long day.
I started separating the files and began with the first one. It was tiring, and I missed lunch, typing on my computer for the next few hours. Finally, I finished and sent the emails to the CEO's email.
I printed out some of the edited copies and gathered them in a new file heading to the CEO's office. My hands froze before I could knock on the door and I made a quick sign of the cross before knocking.
“Come in,” a deep, familiar voice spoke, and I listened.
I closed the door behind me and walked forward placing the file on the table.
“There's all the files you requested, sir. I have sent the soft copies to your email,” I replied, still looking down.
“Okay. I'll check them out,” he replied, and I slowly raised my head to meet his gaze, only to be greeted by shock when his face met mine.
“What was he doing here?” I thought, staring into his eyes.
“Are you done staring?” He asked and I stepped backwards.
“Um, I…I…” I stuttered as I looked away. My eyes didn't listen to my brains as they kept looking at him.
“Y…you're the CEO?” I finally muttered.
“Yes,” he answered coldly.
“Oh no,” I mumbled.
He looked at me and I felt my cheeks heat up and turn red. I looked down at the name tag on his desk, which read “Asher Wellesley.”
“Are you going to keep gawking at me over there?” He asked and I swallowed.
“Um, no,” I said and stumbled while trying to locate the door.
My laptop hit the chair in front of me and I groaned. “Ouch. Damn it!”
I heard him chuckle, and when I turned to look at him, I saw that he was back to being expressionless.
I walked out quickly, embarrassed, and ran to my office seat.
“I had a one-night stand with my boss,” I murmured. “I'm so screwed.”
I buried my face in my hand, not knowing what to do.
“Good job, Kai,” I mocked myself.
