The road that divides

Dawn arrived without softness. Mist clung low to the ground, swallowing sound, bending distance. It was the kind of morning that made footsteps unreliable and promises easier to break. They moved without ceremony. No farewells. No visible escort. Just shifts in position that looked like routine to anyone not paying attention. Two routes, as planned with hers curving east through the thicket, his cutting south toward the ridge. She did not look back. Trust, she had learned, was sometimes an act of restraint. The path narrowed quickly, forcing awareness inward. Every snapped twig sounded deliberate. Every shadow held weight. She kept her pace even, refusing the instinct to hurry. Halfway to the bend, she sensed it the wrongness. Not presence, but intention. A stone marker ahead had been disturbed. Turned just enough to mean something else. She stopped. Behind her, movement answered. Not one figure. Two. The forest shifted again this time loudly. From the left, someone stepped into view, hands raised, expression careful. “Easy,” a voice said. Familiar. Too familiar. Her breath steadied. “You weren’t meant to be on this route.” “Plans change,” the figure replied. “Especially when people talk.” From the right, a second shape emerged silent, unreadable. No hesitation. No apology. They had not come to escort. They had come to redirect. Far away, near the ridge, the Alpha felt it, a tightening, sharp and sudden, like a line pulled too hard. He stopped mid step, eyes lifting, instinct screaming what logic could not confirm. The separation had been compromised. And the road that was meant to protect her had become a test no one was prepared for.
