Chapter 4 A Choice That Changes Everything

1243 Words
For several seconds after Alexander spoke, the room felt frozen. Clara stood there staring at him, unable to process what she had just heard. The words echoed loudly in her mind, refusing to make sense. Marry him? The idea was so absurd that part of her wondered if this was some kind of twisted joke. But when she looked at Alexander’s face, she realized immediately that he wasn’t joking. His expression remained calm and steady, as if he had simply suggested a business meeting rather than a marriage. Ethan was the first to react.“You’ve completely lost your mind,” he said sharply. Alexander glanced at him, unimpressed.“I assure you, my mind is perfectly clear.” Clara finally found her voice.“This is ridiculous,” she said, her tone shaking with anger. “You don’t even know me.” Alexander’s gaze remained fixed on her.“I know enough.” That answer only made her more furious.“You think marriage is just another contract you can sign?” she demanded. “In many ways, it is,” he replied evenly. Clara shook her head in disbelief.“No. Not for normal people.” Alexander tilted his head slightly, studying her again.“And yet here we are, discussing it.” Ethan stepped forward.“This conversation is over,” he said firmly. “You should leave.” For the first time since entering the house, Alexander’s expression hardened slightly. “That decision isn’t yours to make.” Ethan clenched his jaw. “My sister is not some business deal you can negotiate.” Alexander didn’t respond immediately. Instead, his eyes shifted briefly toward Richard Bennett. Clara noticed the movement and followed his gaze. Her father hadn’t spoken for a long time. He sat quietly on the sofa, his shoulders slightly slumped, his hands clasped tightly together. He looked exhausted. Clara felt a painful twist in her chest.“Dad?” she said softly. Richard slowly lifted his head. His eyes looked tired and troubled. “Clara… maybe we should listen to what Mr. Knight has to say.” Clara blinked in disbelief.“You can’t be serious.” Her father sighed heavily. “This situation is more complicated than you realize.” Clara took a step closer to him.“No,” she said firmly. What’s complicated is why you’re even considering this. Richard rubbed his forehead again.“You heard what he said. If the investigation continues…”“I heard,” Clara interrupted. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to marry a stranger just to fix it. Alexander spoke again, his voice calm but firm.“You wouldn’t be fixing it alone.” Clara turned toward him sharply.“Oh really?” Yes, he said simply. She crossed her arms.“Explain.” Alexander walked slowly toward the center of the room again. “If we marry, our families become connected,” he said. “That connection would give me a legitimate reason to invest in Bennett Holdings.” Clara frowned.“And that stops the investigation?”“It stabilizes the situation,” he replied. “Investors will assume the company is secure again.” Ethan shook his head.“So this is all about protecting your public image.” Alexander didn’t deny it. Business reputations matter. Clara felt frustration rising again.“You’re asking me to sacrifice my life just so your company looks good.” Alexander’s voice remained steady.“I’m offering a solution that benefits everyone.” “Everyone except me,” Clara shot back. Silence filled the room again. For the first time, Clara noticed something she hadn’t paid attention to before. Alexander didn’t look angry. He didn’t look impatient either. Instead, he simply looked… certain. As if he already knew how this conversation would end. The realization made Clara uneasy. She turned back to her father.“Tell him no,” she said quietly. Richard didn’t answer. Instead, he stood up slowly from the sofa. For a moment, he looked older than Clara had ever seen him. “Clara,” he said gently, “this company is everything I’ve worked for.”She swallowed hard.“I know.” “I built it from nothing,” he continued. “Every opportunity I had… every sacrifice… it was all for this family.” Clara felt tears sting the corners of her eyes.“You think I don’t understand that?” Richard looked down briefly before continuing. “If the company collapses, hundreds of employees will lose their jobs.” Clara hadn’t thought about that.“Families depend on that business,” he added quietly. The weight of his words pressed heavily on her chest. Ethan stepped closer to Clara. “This isn’t fair,” he said firmly. “You shouldn’t have to carry this.” Clara didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she stared at the floor, her thoughts racing. Everything felt overwhelming. Her dreams, her future, her freedom. All of it suddenly felt fragile. Slowly, she looked up again. Alexander was still standing where he had been before, watching quietly. He didn’t look desperate. He didn’t look cruel either, just calm, confident. As if he believed his offer was completely reasonable, Clara walked toward the window. Outside, the night was quiet. Streetlights illuminated the empty road in front of the house. Her reflection stared back at her in the glass. For a moment, she remembered her plans. Her studies, her dream of opening her own interior design studio someday. A life she had imagined building on her own terms. Now that future felt distant. Behind her, the room remained silent. Everyone was waiting, waiting for her answer. Clara closed her eyes slowly. She thought about her father, about the years he had spent working late nights after their mother died, about the sacrifices he had made to keep their family stable. And she thought about Ethan. How he had always tried to protect her, how he was still standing beside her now, ready to fight this decision. Clara took a deep breath. Then she turned around. Her eyes met Alexander’s. For the first time since he arrived, her voice was quiet but steady.“If I agree to this…” Alexander listened carefully. “It will only be a contract,” Clara continued. His expression didn’t change.“A business arrangement,” she said. “Nothing more.” Alexander nodded once.“That was always the intention.” Clara’s heart felt heavy. Slowly, she looked at her father again. He watched her with hope and guilt written across his face. Clara knew that look. It meant he had already accepted the possibility. Accepted the cost. She inhaled deeply. Then she spoke the words she had never imagined, saying.“Fine.” The word left her lips softly. But it felt louder than anything else in the room. Ethan turned toward her in shock. “Clara” She raised a hand gently to stop him. Then she looked back at Alexander. “I’ll marry you.” For the first time that evening, something changed in Alexander Knight’s expression. Not surprise. Not triumph. Something quieter, something thoughtful. But before Clara could understand what it meant, he spoke again.“Then we should begin preparing.” Clara frowned slightly.“Preparing for what?” Alexander’s next words made her stomach tighten again.“The wedding.” And suddenly Clara realized something terrifying. This arrangement…was about to become very real.
