Chapter 2 – The Man With the Solution

1338 Words
The room felt different the moment Alexander Knight stepped inside. It wasn’t just his presence. It was the quiet confidence he carried with him, the kind that made people instinctively step aside. Clara had seen powerful men before. Her father had worked with many businessmen over the years. But there was something about Alexander Knight that felt… different.Dangerous, even. He stood tall in the doorway, his dark coat resting perfectly over his broad shoulders. His sharp gray eyes briefly scanned the room before settling calmly on Richard Bennett. “Good evening, Mr. Bennett,” he said. His voice was smooth, controlled, and deep enough to command attention without being loud. Richard Bennett cleared his throat.“Mr. Knight… I wasn’t expecting you tonight.” That much is obvious,Alexander replied calmly. Clara frowned slightly at the bluntness of his response.Ethan shifted beside her, clearly uncomfortable.“Perhaps we should sit,” Alexander continued. It didn’t sound like a suggestion,It sounded like a decision.Richard gestured toward the living room. “Yes… of course.”They all moved toward the sofas. Alexander took a seat across from Richard, sitting with the kind of relaxed posture that only confident people had. One arm rested lightly on the back of the sofa while the other rested on his knee. Clara remained standing for a moment before finally sitting beside Ethan.Clara sat back slowly against the sofa, but her attention never left Alexander Knight. Up close, he looked even more intimidating than she had expected. There was something sharp about his features—his defined jawline, the slight furrow between his brows, and the calm yet piercing look in his gray eyes. He looked like a man who was used to being in control of every situation he entered. Even the way he sat seemed deliberate.Relaxed, yet completely alert. Clara noticed how easily he carried himself, as if stepping into someone else’s home meant nothing to him.As if he belonged anywhere he decided to be.It irritated her more than she expected. Ethan leaned closer to her and whispered quietly, “This guy really just walked into our house like he owns it.”Clara almost smiled at that.Almost. But her attention returned to Alexander when he reached into the inner pocket of his coat and pulled out a slim folder. He placed it neatly on the coffee table in front of them. The simple movement made Clara’s stomach tighten. Something about that folder made the situation feel suddenly more serious.Alexander opened it calmly and flipped through several documents. “I prefer discussing important matters with facts,” he said.Clara frowned slightly.“What facts?”Alexander lifted one sheet of paper and placed it on the table. Even from where she sat, Clara could see numbers printed across the page.Financial numbers. “Your father’s company has lost nearly thirty percent of its market value in the past year,” Alexander said calmly.Richard looked down at the paper without speaking. Clara felt a small wave of shock.Thirty percent? She had known the company was facing challenges, but she hadn’t realized it was that bad. Alexander continued speaking as if he were presenting a report in a boardroom.“Several investors have already begun withdrawing their support,” he said. Ethan leaned forward slightly.“And you know all this how?” Alexander looked at him calmly. “I make it my business to know.”Clara crossed her arms again. So you’ve been watching our company?“In a manner of speaking.”She didn’t like that answer. Not at all. It felt as if Alexander Knight knew far more about their lives than he should. And the thought made her uneasy.Alexander closed the folder and rested his hands together. The room fell quiet again. Then he looked directly at Clara.“And that,” he said calmly, looking directly at Richard. “I believe we both understand why I’m here now.”Richard nodded slowly.“Yes.”Clara’s confusion deepened. Dad?vshe asked quietly. “What’s going on?”Her father hesitated. Alexander answered instead.“Your father’s company is currently under serious investigation.”Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly.“Yes,” she said. “He just told us that and you stated it already.” Alexander nodded once.Good. Then we can skip unnecessary explanations.”Clara felt irritation rise in her chest.“I don’t think any of this is unnecessary,” she said. Alexander turned his gaze toward her.For the first time, his full attention was on her.His expression remained calm, but his eyes seemed more intense up close. “And you are?” he asked.Clara blinked.“You know exactly who I am.”A small pause followed. Then something unexpected happened. The corner of Alexander’s mouth lifted slightly. Not quite a smile. But close.“Clara Bennett,” he said. The way he said her name made it clear he already knew it.Clara crossed her arms. Then why ask? “Because I prefer to hear things directly from the source,” he replied.Ethan spoke up before Clara could respond again. Why are you really here, Mr. Knight? Alexander shifted his gaze toward him. “You must be Ethan.”Ethan stiffened slightly. You’ve done your research.“I always do.”Clara didn’t like the sound of that.Alexander looked back at Richard. “As I was saying, your company is under investigation.” Richard nodded again.“Yes.” “And if the investigation continues,” Alexander continued calmly, “there is a high probability that investors will withdraw their support.” Clara felt a wave of dread settle in her stomach.“Which would result in bankruptcy,” Alexander added. The word hung in the air like a heavy weight. Richard looked down.“And possibly criminal charges,” Alexander finished.Clara’s heart tightened.“You’re making it sound worse than it is,” she said quickly. Alexander’s gaze returned to her.“I’m making it sound accurate.”Clara clenched her jaw.“I know my father. He wouldn’t steal money.”I never said he did. “Then what are you implying?”Alexander studied her quietly for a moment before answering.“I’m implying that the situation is more complicated than you think.” Clara opened her mouth to argue again, but Richard raised a hand gently.Clara… it’s alright. She looked at him.But she could see the worry in his eyes. And that made her frustration fade into fear. Alexander leaned back slightly.Fortunately,he continued, “this situation is not impossible to fix.”Ethan frowned.“You mean you can stop the investigation?” “In a manner of speaking.”Clara’s attention sharpened.“How?”Alexander looked directly at Richard again. There are ways to calm investors,he said. “Ways to restore confidence in a company.”Richard looked up slowly. “You mean… an investment?” Alexander didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he let the silence stretch for a moment. Then he said simply:“Yes.” Clara felt a small spark of hope.If Alexander Knight invested in Bennett Holdings, it could save everything.Richard seemed to think the same thing. “You would invest in my company?” he asked carefully.Alexander’s expression remained unreadable.“I could.” The way he said it made Clara uneasy again. There was something hidden in his tone.Something calculated.“But?” Ethan asked. Alexander’s gaze moved slowly across the room. Then it stopped on Clara. The air suddenly felt heavier.“Every investment comes with conditions,” he said calmly. Clara felt a strange chill run down her spine.“What kind of condition?” she asked.Alexander didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he leaned forward slightly, resting his hands together. His eyes never left Clara’s face. And when he finally spoke, his voice was quieter. But somehow even more powerful. “I believe,” he said slowly, that we should discuss my proposal privately.”Clara’s stomach tightened.A proposal? What kind of proposal? Her father looked uneasy again. And suddenly Clara realized something frightening.Alexander Knight hadn’t com e here simply to help.He had come with a deal. And whatever that deal was… It was going to change her life.
