Chapter 7 – Cracks Beneath the Surface

Clara barely touched her dinner that night. The long dining table inside the Knight estate was large enough to seat at least twenty people, yet the atmosphere felt painfully suffocating with only a few occupants present. Crystal glasses reflected the soft chandelier lights while quiet classical music played faintly in the background, but none of it eased the tension sitting heavily in Clara’s chest. Especially not with Olivia Hayes seated directly across from her. Every few minutes, Clara could feel Olivia’s eyes drifting toward her with subtle amusement, as though she already knew something Clara didn’t. It was irritating enough that Clara struggled to focus on the food in front of her. Beside her, Ethan looked equally uncomfortable, though his attention occasionally wandered toward the kitchen entrance whenever Lily appeared to assist the staff. Clara noticed it immediately. And judging by the slight blush on Lily’s face whenever Ethan looked her way, the feeling seemed mutual. At least someone in this mansion was capable of acting human. Alexander sat at the head of the table, calm as always, discussing business matters with one of his assistants who stood nearby holding a tablet. Even during dinner, he somehow looked more like a CEO attending a meeting than a man preparing for marriage. It annoyed Clara more than she expected, how could someone be so emotionally detached? “You’re unusually quiet tonight, Clara.” Olivia’s voice interrupted her thoughts smoothly.Clara looked up slowly. “I didn’t realize we were close enough for you to notice.”Olivia smiled faintly at the response.Sharp. Alexander glanced briefly toward Clara before returning his attention to the document in front of him. Olivia rested her chin lightly against her hand. “I suppose this situation must be overwhelming for you.” Clara folded her arms slightly.“You could say that,” especially considering how suddenly everything happened.” There was something deliberate about the way Olivia spoke, as though every sentence carried a hidden meaning beneath it. Clara was beginning to dislike her more by the second.“What exactly are you trying to say?” Clara finally asked. Olivia’s smile widened slightly, “Nothing,” she replied innocently. “I just think marriage should involve love. Don’t you?” The question lingered heavily in the air. Clara instinctively looked toward Alexander, but his expression remained unreadable. Typical.“I think marriage should involve honesty,” Clara answered carefully. For the first time that evening, something flickered briefly in Olivia’s eyes. Interest. Before either woman could continue, Alexander finally closed the file in front of him and looked directly at Clara. “The wedding date has been confirmed.”Clara stiffened immediately.“What?” “It will take place next Saturday.”Ethan nearly choked on his drink. “Next Saturday?” he repeated loudly. “That’s barely a week away.” Alexander remained calm. “The media announcement will be released tomorrow morning. Delaying the ceremony would only create unnecessary speculation.” Clara stared at him in disbelief.“You already announced it to the media?” It’s being handled. Her frustration rose instantly. “You don’t get to make decisions about my life without asking me first.” Alexander’s gray eyes met hers steadily. “You agreed to the arrangement.” “That doesn’t mean you control everything.” The atmosphere around the table tightened immediately.Even the staff seemed nervous now. For a moment, Alexander said nothing. Then he placed his glass down carefully before speaking in the same controlled tone that somehow irritated Clara more than shouting would have. “This marriage is already attracting attention from investors and the press,” he explained. “The sooner things appear stable, the better it will be for both families.” “There you go again,” Clara snapped softly. “Talking about marriage like it’s another business strategy.” A brief silence followed. Then Olivia suddenly laughed quietly under her breath. Everyone looked toward her. “I warned you,” she said lightly while looking at Clara. “Alexander has always cared more about control than emotions.” Alexander’s expression hardened slightly.“That’s enough, Olivia.” But Olivia only leaned back comfortably in her chair.“Why?” she asked calmly. “Am I wrong?” The tension in the room thickened instantly. Clara looked between both of them carefully, sensing something deeper hidden beneath the conversation. Something unresolved. “You were engaged,” Clara said suddenly.Olivia’s eyes shifted toward her slowly. “So you’ve heard about me.” Clara ignored the comment.“What happened?” Alexander’s jaw tightened immediately. “That discussion is unnecessary.” But Olivia smiled again, though this time it looked more bitter than amused. “No,” she said quietly. “Maybe she deserves to know.” Alexander’s voice turned colder. “Olivia.”Clara noticed the warning in his tone instantly. But Olivia continued anyway. “Alexander doesn’t believe in love,” she said while holding Clara’s gaze. “At least not enough to choose it over business.” The words settled heavily inside Clara’s chest. For the first time since meeting him, she wondered if Alexander had always been this emotionally distant… or if something had made him that way. Before Clara could think further, her phone suddenly vibrated beside her plate. She frowned slightly after seeing the unknown number flashing across the screen. Excusing herself quietly, she stood and walked away from the dining area before answering. “Hello?” For a few seconds, only static greeted her from the other end. Then a low male voice finally spoke.“You shouldn’t trust Alexander Knight.” Clara stopped walking immediately. Her grip tightened around the phone. “Who is this?” “You’re making a mistake marrying him,” a chill slowly crept down her spine. “Who are you?” she repeated more firmly. But the line suddenly went dead.Clara stared at the phone screen in confusion, her heartbeat quickening slightly. Something about the caller’s voice felt strangely urgent. Almost afraid.“Miss Bennett?” Clara looked up sharply to find Lily standing a few feet away holding folded towels in her arms. “You startled me,” Clara admitted quietly. “Sorry,” Lily replied softly before noticing Clara’s uneasy expression. “Is everything alright?” Clara hesitated. Then she forced a small nod.“Yeah… I think so.” But even as she said the words, she knew they weren’t true. Because for the first time since agreeing to the marriage, Clara felt something far more dangerous than fear. She felt doubt, not about the contract, not about Alexander but about what she might be walking into without knowing the full truth. And deep inside, a terrifying thought began to form. What if marrying Alexander Knight wasn’t the real danger? What if the danger had already started long before she met him? Later that night, long after Clara had returned to her room, sleep refused to come. The grand bedroom felt colder than usual despite the heated marble floors. Clara sat on the edge of the bed, staring at her phone in silence. The unknown number was still there. No call history. No identity. Just a reminder that someone had reached out—and disappeared just as quickly. She replayed the voice again in her mind. “You shouldn’t trust Alexander Knight…” Her fingers tightened slightly around the phone. Outside her window, the London skyline glowed faintly—tower lights blinking like silent watchers. Somewhere in that vast city, secrets were moving faster than she could understand. A soft knock came at her door. Clara quickly locked her phone screen. “Who is it?” A pause, then Ethan’s voice came through gently. “It’s me. Are you awake?Clara stood and opened the door slightly. Ethan looked tired, but his expression was serious. “I couldn’t sleep,” he admitted. “Something about tonight felt… off.” Clara studied him for a moment. “You felt it too?” Ethan nodded slowly. “Olivia. Alexander. Even that call earlier I don’t know, Clara, something doesn’t add up in this house.” Clara’s silence was enough of an answer. Ethan lowered his voice. “Just… be careful, okay?” She gave a small nod, but even after he left, the warning lingered in the air like smoke. When she finally closed the door again,Clara leaned against it quietly. For the first time, she realized something unsettling. She had walked into a marriage thinking she was saving her father. But she might have just stepped into something far bigger than she was prepared for. And somewhere in the silence of the Knight estate… someone was watching the same silence.
