After I left the hospital, I moved into a new apartment. Adrian came by almost every day. He didn't dare knock. He only left things outside my door. Sometimes it was my favorite breakfast, sometimes an old photo he'd restored, sometimes a long letter. I never brought any of it inside. On the third day, a small wooden box appeared at my door. His wedding ring lay inside. A sheet of paper was tucked underneath. It said Sophie's imitation ring had been turned over to the police as evidence. He was transferring the house to me and leaving me all our savings. I handed the documents to my attorney. "Split everything normally. I won't take more than my share, and I won't owe him anything."
