Chapter three: Field of Flowers

2306 Words
At The Field. I breathed in the warm air that reminded me of a field of lilies that used to spring out on the now absent grass ground I currently stood on. My heart sped up as a warm familiar hand rested on my shoulder. I looked up to see his blue eyes staring down at me. “Are you ready to do this?” He asked, grabbing my hand in his. “We’re cutting it awfully close now, Lamar might run off because he pissed his pants or something.” I smiled and breathed a light-hearted sigh of relief at his comment. As uncomfortable as this situation was, his ability to still find the humor in all of this still amused me. “I’m not sure that’s his style,” I chuckled, “with him being the demonic prince that will not go back to where he belongs.” “I don’t know, he might run for the hills once he sees how outnumbered he is.” He lifted me up above him. “But it’s good to see you smile for once, given the situation.” “Put me down!” I protested, but failed as I let a few laughs escape me. “Oh, not just yet!” He spun me around several times until he finally placed me on the ground again. “I-“ The ground started to shake from under the two of us, which meant it was time to do what we came to this exact place to do. Before I could process what was happening, the wind had picked up. We were now in what felt to be a child’s form of a tornado. He looked over at me with fear written all over his face. “TAKE MY HAND!!!!” He yelled out to me over the gust of wind. “WE’RE OUT OF TIME!!!” “I’M NOT READY-“ “IT’S ALRIGHT!!! WHATEVER HAPPENS WE WILL FIGHT!” With tears clouding my vision, and the wind making it worse, I still reached out to grab onto him. I was scared, but as long as he was by my side, I could fight off whatever came next. He’s been trained countless times in similar situations like these. I closed my eyes and embraced the white orbs of light that encircled the two of us. We were gulped up in light and in that instant of a moment... We disappeared. *** I woke up in a field. It was different from the one we were just taken away from. This one was filled with pink roses. I felt them all around me as I lifted myself to sit up. I looked down to my right side and realized that my hand was still tightly laced around his, I smiled to myself. He made a sound of what sounded like a grunt in his sleep before he turned over. “Where are we now?” He asked, still half asleep. “I’m not sure,” I looked around, “but I don’t see any monstrous worms in sight. Just flowers.” At first, his body relaxed beside me. But not even a moment later, he gathered all of his strength to get himself up and pick me up in his arms. We were now running towards what I could see as an open space where there were no flowers. “Jordan, what is it?” “We have to get out of here!” He replied breathlessly. “It’s not safe sitting on all of these flowers.” “Why n-“ I paused mid sentence as I noticed there was a giant ten foot worm sliding it’s way towards us. It was huge. “Um, Jordan-“ I felt his shoulders tense up as he started to run faster. “Please tell me you just forgot what you were about to say? And that there’s not a monster running after us right now.” “I can’t exactly say yes to both of those things.” I heard him curse under his breath. I looked over to where he was running to. We were almost there, it was just half a yard between us now. “Are we gonna be safe over there?” I referred to the open space. “The flowers are like a power source for the worm. The longer we’re over here the stronger he gets, more dangerously the longer he can sit and wait for an opportunity.” “Of what exactly?” “To prey on us Hayden. A few moments more and he could’ve bitten your legs off.” I felt him tense up again. “f**k! I hope we make it. How close is it?” I looked back and saw the worm inching closer in steps but it was still far away. “Getting pretty damn close, but still too far to bite my head off.” “There’s not a way in hell I’d let that happen!” “Jordan! JORDAN!!” The worm was about five feet from us now. I shut my eyes not wanting to see the inside of his mouth. Whatever gender it was, it was about half a foot away from my face. I felt it’s slimy breath breathing a few inches away from me. I clung my arms around Jordan’s neck as my heart sped up. This was it, I could feel it. As impossibly fast as Jordan was, we were running out of time again. This monster didn’t have legs but he was still gaining on us. There was a moment where I felt his breath above me as hot as an oven. But in an instant it was gone. I opened my eyes to see that we were in an open space, and I was still in Jordan’s arms. “I told you,” I heard him say, “there would not be a way in hell I’d let him get to you.” “How did you do that?” “Shhhhh, you get too worked up when you're scared.” “But, we were half a yard away from here.” I stated. “And how the hell is he trapped in the field of flowers?” Jordan stood in a center spot, incredibly close to where the field of flowers started. We were on the other side. The worm, however, was now continuously thumping his head against an invisible shield that kept him somehow locked on the side of the flowers. It was like looking at a kid trying to open a child-proof lock. Jordan sighed. “He can’t get out. The flowers also bound him to the field like a prison.” “Lucky for us?” “Yeah,” he said as he started to walk away from the worm, “but that’s not even the biggest problem we’ll face just yet.” “I’m confused. What can be possibly worse than nearly getting nearly eaten by a ten foot worm?” “Oh, that’s easy!” I heard a sleezy voice behind me, “Dying at my hand… that just might be the worst thing you’ll ever face.” *** I turned around to see his sly grin plastered on his face as if the expression was stuck on his face. He slowly walked towards us and pointed his finger in my direction. “I’ll give you credit for escaping my latest creation. He took a hell of a time creating.” “That’s ironic, I thought that might’ve been you chasing us back there.” I glanced back at the worm who was still trying to break the invisible shield that held him in the field of flowers. “You tend to throw this same exact tantrum when you don’t get what you want.” His sly grin was beginning to fade. “Let’s not waste time, shall we?” He motioned his hand so aggressively, I hadn’t noticed the new sight of flowers that were blooming around me and Jordan. I felt Jordan’s back on mine. “Hayden, we have a problem.” I dreaded the sound of the worm moving behind me. He twisted around in front of me , his mouth just inches away from my face. I could feel his unbearable hot breath once again. I heard Lamar lightly laughing. “Any last words, dear?” “Actually, I just have two… PETER NOW!” At that moment, around fifty men emerged from the bushes and after that all I heard were g*n blasts. The worm was being sliced in every direction of its very thick and long orange body. I could see blue gunshot blasts being shot at it. It seemed to be overwhelmed by being attacked so suddenly that it barely had time to react. There was a screeching noise before I saw it fall to the ground looking more lifeless than ever. Lamar started to make a run for it, but not before Justice and three other men placed binding handcuffs on his wrists and tackled him to the ground. “Not so fast, tough guy,” Justice said as he smirked, “We haven’t even gotten started yet.” I bent down in front of his now defenseless body that was pinned down. “It’s ironic isn’t it? All this work you did to get me here just turned out to be a waste.” “I have one more secret weapon.” He managed to say. “And she won’t be so easily caught off guard.” I smiled. “If you’re talking about Lucinda, you better take a good look at her while you can.” Peter walked up with a tied up Lucinda. “Celeste is safe back at the house. She’s no longer in danger.” I nodded at him in approval. “You foolish girl!” Lamar shouted. “If you think I would leave my last hope in someone as fragile as Lucinda, you are rudely mistaken.” “What are you talking about? What else could you-” Before I could finish I noticed He was flaming up in black smoke. Damn it. “Peter, take off the cuffs!” But it was too late...He had withered away into ash before Peter could turn the key to unlock the cuffs. In spite of frustration, Peter started to slice off Lucinda’s head. “Wait!” She started to plead. “I can help you. Celeste is still in danger.” I stood up to face her. “What are you talking about?” “Lamar, he injected her with his blood. As you’re well aware of, a human having demonic blood running through their veins is incredibly lethal.” “So how would you be able to help me?” “I can heal her because I’m half angel and half human. That’s the part Lamar left out about me.” “How is that even possible? I’ve never heard of such a thing or even-” “My mother was r***d by Lamar’s father. She kept me a secret for as long as she could but it was only a matter of time until he found us and took me away to Lamar. My mother hasn’t been seen or heard of ever since.” “I don’t understand… Why t*****e my fiance if you had angel blood in you.” “I never participated in any form of t*****e regarding her, she can tell you that herself. But we don’t have much time before the infection sets in. Once that happens she won’t have enough strength to maintain her human side and the demonic side that will take over her body.” “Alright,” I said as I held my hand up. “Why would you help me anyway after we almost chopped your head off.” She smiled. “I’m nothing like my brother. Unlike him I actually have a conscience. That’s why I care so much. I will do whatever you want after we help your soon to be wife but right now we have to get to her right away.” I hesitated, only for a moment. Since we have stepped foot on this field I have not received any threat from this woman at all. Maybe I could trust her. She seemed to have good intentions and seemed to want to help me. I don’t know why but something inside of me told me to trust her. She has not given me a reason not to. Besides, just because her brother had no mercy for the well being of others doesn’t mean she feels the same way. Here goes nothing. “Okay,” I extended my hand to her as Peter untied her hands, “I’ll take a leap here and trust you.” She seemed taken aback about the fact that I wanted to shake her hand. “No one of your kind has ever wanted to come in physical contact with me. They assume that I’m just as evil as my brother and would turn them into ash.” “I’m not like any of my kind, I can promise you that.” I nodded to her. She released a sigh as she took hold of my hand. At that very moment, there was a sudden change in the air. It felt more pure, as if something Miraculus were about to happen. The clouds started to move apart to let a c***k of sunshine through. I couldn;t understand at all what was happening at the moment. Lucinda smiled as she looked up at the clouds. “My friend John says Hi.” She shook her head. “He thanks you for opening yourself up to work with me.” ***
