The first thing Teni noticed about her new life was the silence. In Sango, silence was a luxury you never had. But here, on the 42nd floor, the thick carpets swallowed every sound. With the advance Alexander had given her, Teni had done the impossible. She bought three sets of modest but sharp corporate wears from a boutique in Ikeja. When she looked in the mirror, she didn't see the girl who carried buckets of water on her head; she saw a woman who belonged behind a mahogany desk. "Teniola, my coffee. Black, no sugar," Alexander’s voice came over the intercom. She walked into his office, her stride more confident now. She set the cup down, and as she did, she noticed him watching her—not the way a boss watches a worker, but the way a man watches a flame. "You've adjusted quickly," he said, leaning back. His eyes traced the line of her new blazer. "The staff is already talking about how the new assistant is a 'computer wizard'." Teni blushed, a warm heat spreading to her chest. "I just like things to be organized, sir." "Call me Alexander," he said softly. "When we are in this office alone, 'Sir' feels like a lie.”
