The smell of fish and chips drew Melanie into the chippy. She ordered the cod and chips. Everyone else had ordered that, so it couldn’t be that bad, could it? She watched in line as other people splashed on salt and vinegar and mimicked them, hoping it wasn’t a mistake. As well as the meal, she got a bottle of water to wash it down. Melanie felt like a stranger in a new land, trying new foods for the first time. Though this wasn’t the first time she’d had fish and chips, that had been a long time ago. The smell of the dish brought back memories. Family days out to a place she didn’t know, a beach with an old church ruin on a hill and some strange, large bones near a path that led down to the beach.
