The shock on my face was evident. I felt Julibe's hand push against my chest. Falling backward, I saw the young lad jump over me, and javelin struck through his body in mid-air. His body crumpled to the ground shaking as his life eventually dispersed. His blood-stained my face and my cloth. It was a fierce horror. A very strange feeling zapped through my mind, and I just felt like my windpipe would burst. I heard the scream. It was I. It was all me. I felt the familiar pair of hands holding my shoulders and soft words breathing down my
neck though some filtered through to my ears. Amid all this, it struck me, Julibe's face had said it all, it was like when his sister, his only remaining family had died. Feela was dead. Killed by these people too. He was dead. They kill mercilessly. It's the End.
My screaming stopped. Everyone was silent. The surrounding airs, the trees stood still. Even the birds in the sky were missing and the squirrels had scrabbled away. Everywhere was silent. Dangerously calm. I knew deep down. Just within my inner self. I may never return. I made a silent prayer to My Father, my mother, and my sister. Who I desperately prayed was safe. In resignation, I stood up and my shoulder slumped back in defeat. I felt like I had gone through a war but I ended hopeless without void. Feeling absent-minded, I felt a familiar pair of hands wipe the sticky hue off my face. One of the captors who had thrown the javelin moved towards the lying carcass and removed the javelin and turned on his back then he shouted at us to move along but we didn't the horror on her face alerted his resolve. I stared in shock and took a few steps away from them. The body pierced with the javelin stood on his feet. Smiling menacingly, his teeth blooded. He grabbed unto the captor and brought down his teeth on the spot between his strong neck and shoulder. The shock and the screams from the captor were harmoniously octave and noticed as the closest captor brought down his sword on the bewitched Body. His head left its neck, it rolled away into the wood. The victimized Captor lay motionless on the beheaded body, probably unconscious I can't say.
Upfront, the path to the incident cleared as a black horse galloped lazily towards us. The man on the horse who seemed to be their leader constantly beats the horse to move faster with the horsewhip. As if it had its motive he stuck to his pace despite the man's agitation.
The man jumped down to his feet and walked gallantly. His hands swung as he moved with his legs. His bushy brow arched in raised commas, his eyes were whole but wide-opened and strangely focused. His lips formed a thin line. He was in a rage. He unscathed his sword from his scabbard. As the weak captor started to stir up from the weak state he pierced his heart with the sword. That was it. The man rubbed his sword on the body and climbed back on, this time, however, the horse galloped faster, away from us in great speed. Just like that, we didn't waste time, we continued on our journey like that didn't happen. We left the wood leaving the dead meal for the wandering animals.
It didn't take us long to reach a river. We waited for instruction. Our captors released some of us, those who appeared agile and strong. They fell trees and cut them into big logs. They rolled these logs into the rivers and told us to hold them. I wondered if this was their usual practice, I didn’t know they could fall trees the way they do. From where I come from we dig out the root from the soil and the tree falls by itself.
The river was indeed troublesome, its sides were nowhere near calm. The log helped to move against the strong currents. As soon as we got to the middle of the river, many of us who could not swim drowned. Some were saved while others were not. Someone among us, a very weird man who was drowning rejected help despite his inability to swim. Anytime, he come for air or had the opportunity to he would shout saying that there was something in the water. That the thing was grabbing him and had beaten him. Luckily, he was saved and was led to the shore. But as soon as he got to the shore, he slumped and died. Our captors believed he was pretending, one of them threatened to stab him in the chest still the corpse showed no fear. No sign of life. It was until he stabbed him in the chest that he realized that he was indeed dead.
Shortly after others joined including two of our captors. Their bodies were examined, we could see two clear
drill holes on their legs. It looked like a snake bite. Still, we continued without offering any burial rites to the
dispersed.
It was a sign of relief among our captors when we came across a path that led to a great wall. The wall was nothing I have ever seen, it was so tall. It made me wonder what lies behind it. As we neared the wall, I noticed it has windows on them. Some people waved at us. Looking closely, they were women. Then we heard a great sound. It was made by a bigger flute with a funneled end. These people call it the trumpet. It was as if we were been welcomed except our shackles tell us otherwise. On a particular window, their hang on it was a red rope.
A very beautiful but strange damsel sat by this window and swung her legs as she called out to the captors calling them out by name.
"Hello, my fine friends!" She called smiling and waving. They seemed embarrassed by her attention.
Irritated, she bellowed "I can't remember the last time a man tried so hard to ignore me!"
As the continued, the commander rode past ignoring her outburst. Then, she called out to the commander welcoming him to her bed. "I have cool wine, fresh bread, and a comfortable place for you to sleep"
The commander glanced up clearly did plead with her continued attention. "I don't have enough money for your services Ronia.""Have I set a price? You will get rich soon won't you?"
"After you have sold these souls with you"
He gave her a dismissive wave and smacked his scabbard against a captive who was gawking at her.
As the great wall opened wide the Commander led the front and we strolled into this new place. A different
world beyond my home.
