I remembered back to that fateful date 5 years ago when John had come to us and we had talked to the early hours until I woke at midday the next day in my own bed feeling disorientated as the last thing I remembered I had fallen asleep next to John's wolf. Hadn't I --?! I quickly got up, changed my clothes, had a wash and walked out to the kitchen to grab something to eat.
"Hey mum! Is there any eggs--?!" I stopped short as I saw John sitting at the kitchen table with my Dad. Dad had the newspaper open staring intently. He always kept an eye out for any 'strange' happenings which usually signalled rogue packs or lone wolves that were trying to strongarm in our territory. John had the 'classifieds' open and had a cup of coffee. John had been the mechanic for his last pack and was looking for any jobs in the area.
"Well this looks homey...?!" I said.
"Ah Luna, you're finally awake. This is John. I believe you met. Last night. In the barn." Dad said the last bits with raised eyebrows.
"Ahhh yes, Hi John --" I said out loud.
What the f**k dude?! You told Dad. About last night. In the barn?! I mind-speaked to John.
"Hi Luna."
"And why not?! We didn't do anything, wrong. Unless you count you falling asleep and me carrying you back to your room as wrong..." He said with a quivering giggle
"So, what's the plans for today on your first day of the holidays?" Dad asked
"Oh, holidays? Really Luna?" John asked
"Oh nothing much. I was thinking of catching up with Tempest down at the mall." I replied to Dad.
"Let's stop being rude and speak out loud so Dad can hear us." I mind-speaked to John "Because this is getting really disorientating." I accidentally said out loud.
"What was that Luna? What's disorientating?" Dad said out loud.
"Oh, ah, nothing. Sorry Dad I was ummmm using my outside voice for my inside thoughts. Did I just say that out loud...? Oh s**t!" I stumbled over myself to Dad.
"Sorry John, this is my daughter. And as you can tell she spends quite a bit of time in her head. At times too much time!" Dad looked at me pointedly.
"It's fine." John said. "I tend to do the same thing too at times." John mind-speaked to me.
"Right. Well I'd better be off then. See ya Dad. Ahhh, bye John." I ran out the door feeling slightly unnerved by how good he looked at that table in his jeans, brown eyes focussed on his paper, flexed lats, and I would bet a pretty penny that the stomach under that black v-neck was washboard flat... A girl could quite easily sit on that table with legs wide open, waiting for him to feast on her --. What the hell was I thinking?! Oh great Mother - you must be the big comedian because my wolf was screaming one thing very loudly since I walked into the barn last night, "MATE! MINE! MY MATE!" I could only hope that he was feeling the same but after the loss of his fiance, his mate only a month earlier I couldn't possibly hope that he would feel the same about me. Could he?
Without realising it I had made it to Tempest's place two blocks over which was like my second home.
"Hey Tempest! You up yet? It's past midday!" I yelled as I banged on the front door.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm coming! Keep your panties in a twist!" She screamed back.
"Come on. Let's go grab some dairy queen at the mall!" I yelled, steeling myself for the convo that was to come about John.
She quickly grabbed her jacket and ran out the door."Great mother! I have something to tell you!" She said to me and then stopped. "Hey, are you okay Luna?"
"Yeah, I'll tell you about it on the way to the mall but you first. What's your news?" We decided to walk to the mall. It was a warm day out and I wanted to grab as much sunshine as I could after spending such long months studying and trying to maintain my grades. It was the only way that Mum and Dad would let me have a car - if I maintained an A average. Oh and no boys! Which was pretty easily done considering no-one had ever grabbed my attention until last night.
"Sooo, you know how I went to that party last night. You know - Taylor's party?"
"Oh for all that is holy Tempest! What in the bright blue blazers were you thinking --?! You know Taylor's parties are just made for frat wolves looking to hook up with naive 16-year-old wolves and free booze! As well as every other kind that you encounter there. It's dangerous Taylor." I yelled at her, fighting for calm. Those parties were no joke - I had heard more than a few stories of girls coming home so drunk they didn't know what had happened the night before. Every one rocked up to those parties - from fae, werekind, Vampires, and all in between.
"I know. I know. That's why I got there and then instantly regretted it. Anyway of course Michael was there with Eric. And of course Michael was all up in my grill asking me what I was doing there and how I got there?" She said.
"Well yeah, of course Michael would. He's your older brother! The question is, what was he doing there--?!" I replied with a sneaky giggle.
"And that was exactly my question to him. I swear I could smell a weird smell off him --"
"What like wolf-crack?!" I said.
"No, you know he'd never do that crap. It was more like a woman--. Like his whole scent had changed."
"Ahhhhh, like mate." I guessed.
"Yeah. Anywayz, I was about to yell and then Eric stepped in --. You know they've been best friends for ages so I wasn't really expecting him to jump in. But he did saying that it was ok and he would take me home. He quickly grabbed my arm and led me out to his camaro." She said.
"Yeah, then what happened...?" I asked as I looked at the blush that had slowly stolen up her neck and was now very obviously planted on her two cheeks.
"Nothing much. He took me home. The end!" Tempest said.
"Ohhhh, we are so revisiting this story! I know that's not all that happened Tempest and I also know that something that got you that excited doesn't end with two words. You've been crushing on Eric for the last 6 years so there is no way that nothing happened..." I said, putting two and two together.
"What about you? You said you had some news." She quickly changed the subject to me. I too started blushing.
"Well don't we both look like a pair of beetroot! Blushing from neck to cheek." I admitted. Knowing Tempest the way I did there was no point in hiding anything from her. It would all come out in the end.
"I think I've found my mate." I blurted out to Tempest.
"What --?! How do you know? Since when? Who? How did it happen? Does it hurt?" Tempest quick-fired at me.
"Ok. Hold on. One question at a time. Firstly, John. Secondly, we got to talking last night and my wolf said "mate". Thirdly, it happened last night when we got to talking. And lastly of course it doesn't hurt -- jeez! It's not like a broken arm Tempest?!" I quick-fired answers back at her.
"Oh. No I was just wondered because I think Eric might be my mate too. I think I've known for a while..." Tempest replied.
We had just reached the mall. We turned around and stared at each other wondering what the heck were we going to do to handle this.
