chapter four

We were thrown forward and back again in our seats as the pilots tried to swerve us away from the eye of the storm. I think I hit my head around a lot. I was getting a little dizzy. A few minutes later, things were calm as we flew. Nobody spoke a word. Everyone waited to see if the stories we've been told were true and how they would affect us. After about fourth-five minutes, things got rough again. "CAUTION! CAUTION!CRITICAL POWER LOSS. SYSTEMS AFFECTED" Emergency signals blared loudly in the plane. "What's happening?" Rick asked the question in my head. "I think we are in the devil's triangle," Sam answered. "Everyone hang on tight and make sure you're holding on to something," I said before struggling to make my way up to the control unit. The air was tensed amongst the pilots, and anyone could tell that they were all trying their best to remain calm in this situation. "Look, kid,we are going to try and land this thing somewhere, but it's going to be a rough one, and .....not everyone will be able to make it out of here alive. So listen carefully, the moment this plane hits the ground, get your crew and run towards the package exit . you'll have only 30 seconds so make it count and lastly get back home safe and tell our families that we love them" He said and gave me a long look that I understood quite well at the moment. He wanted me to make it out of here,it counts as his last job. He kissed the cross chain he was wearing and focused on trying to land the plane. I turned and ran in the opposite direction. I intend to make sure I walk out of this plane with all my teammates alive. "Pack your things, leave anything that's going to slow you down because your lives depend on this race," I told them. Everyone seemed to get the message pretty clear. Nobody was sure of making it, but they were at least going to try. Everyone held on to seats as we waited for the plane to touch ground. The moment the plane landed, it felt like a slowed scene out of a horror movie. Windows broke in because of the force. Everyone ran because, indeed, their lives depend on it. I hit the latch that opened up the back of the plane, and we ran. 21 seconds to go,everything was good.18 seconds to go,Sam's bag got caught on something. He was a total mess. He was panicking and shaking so hard,he couldn't untangle his bag. Good heavens, please don't let me die... I prayed and went back for him. Steve and Marcus came back as well. 10 seconds left,we finally got him free, but the plane was landing nose first, so we were thrown back into the plane. Things were really getting bad now. Marcus hit his leg and got it twisted in the wrong way. 7 seconds to go, we tried to lift Marcus and take him with us, but darn!, was he heavy. " You guys won't make it if you carry me, go on without me, I'll be right behind you," He said, trying to hold back the tears that were already spilling. There was tightness in my chest. I couldn't get off. "Go now!" He said and pushed us off of him. The nose of the plane was already blowing up behind us.5..4..3..2.. We made it out, but Marcus didn't. The plane burned in raging flames. I moved away from the explosion, feeling like a failure. Ever felt like a failure?,it feels horrible. A foreboding feeling in your chest that you can't get off. A few seconds later, a force from the burning plane rippled through the air . It threw us off balance, but what got me worried was that Steve hadn't moved from the plane after we got out. I raced back to where he had been standing and almost threw up. The explosion wave had carried him and hit him so hard that his head was placed backwards and the rest of his body was injured beyond recognition. Guilt ate at me from the inside out. I let this happen. Today, we had lost two teammates and three pilots, all for this sick mission. We found a place to camp for the night. Everyone was sober and solemn. Nobody spoke, nobody cried, we all just sat there in silence as if waiting for something. "Why are you all so solemn. People die everyday, this is not new. So you guys should just put it behind you, " James said. "How could you say that James, we just lost people, not some pencils James , so why don't you put your shitty attitude aside and have a moment of silence to honour them " Delf, the one whose usually quite finally spoke up and we all supported her. "Well if you guys are going to sit there all night and sulk, I'm not, I'm going to bed because next thing I know, one of you oh-so-serious peeps will say that this wasn't a coincidence but a premeditated plan to bring us here so we could all be killed like in those horror films" He said and laid facing away from us. Somehow, he had sparked a new fear in everyone's heart. A new what if, what if he just jinxed us by saying that out loud.....
