Chapter 18: On The Run

258 Words
12 hours. That's what M gave us. We used 3. Private jet. No flight plan. No name on the manifest. Just me, Adrian, and 2 bodyguards. "Where are we going?" I asked as we took off. "Somewhere she won't look," Adrian said. He was typing furiously. "A house I bought 5 years ago. Under a fake name." He finally looked up. "I'm sorry. For dragging you into this." I put my hand on his. "You didn't. I chose you." His face softened. "Wife." The flight was 6 hours. I tried to sleep. Couldn't. Adrian didn't either. He watched me the whole time. We landed on a private strip. Snow. Mountains. A cabin. Far from everything. "This was my escape plan," he said. "When I was 18 and she tried to control me." Inside: fireplace, kitchen, one bedroom. "One bed again," I said quietly. "Unless you want separate rooms," he offered. I shook my head. "No." That night, the power went out. Storm. We sat by the fire. Blankets. His arm around me. My phone had no signal. His didn't either. For the first time in months... silence. "Do you regret it?" he asked. "The contract. Me." I leaned my head on his shoulder. "The only thing I regret is that it took me 365 days to realize I love you." He went still. Then he turned me to face him. "Say it again." "I love you, Adrian Cole." He kissed me. Desperate. Like it was the last time. Outside, headlights cut through the snow. We weren't alone anymore.
