The headlights got closer.
Adrian grabbed a gun from under the couch. "Stay behind me."
"Who is it?" I whispered.
"Don't know."
Knock knock knock.
Heavy. Deliberate.
Adrian opened the door 2 inches. Gun behind his back.
The man outside was soaked. Bleeding.
My father.
"Let me in," he said. "Please."
Adrian didn't move. "Why should I?"
"Because if I don't get inside in 60 seconds, M's men will."
Adrian looked at me. I nodded.
He opened the door.
My father stumbled in. Dripping. Holding his side.
"She shot me," he gasped. "M. She said if I didn't bring you to her, she'd kill us all."
I ran to him. "Dad--"
"Don't," he said. "I don't deserve it."
Then he looked at my stomach. "A grandchild. I... I came to protect you."
Headlights. More than one.
Engines.
Adrian pulled the curtains. "4 cars. Armed."
"Basement," he said. "Now."
He pushed me toward a trapdoor. "Stay down. No matter what."
"Adrian--"
"Promise me."
I nodded. Tears falling.
He kissed me. Hard. Fast.
"I love you too," he whispered. "Now go."
I climbed down. My father followed.
Above us, the door burst open.
Boots. Yelling.
Gunshots.
Then silence.
"Dad?" I whispered.
No answer.
Only footsteps coming down the stairs.
Slow.
Toward us.
