Chapter 20: Bestseller

237 Words
The footsteps stopped at the bottom of the stairs. A flashlight hit my face. I shielded my eyes. "Hello, daughter." It wasn't M. It wasn't her men. It was him. "Uncle Mark?" I whispered. "Dad's brother?" He smiled. "Took you long enough to figure it out." He kicked my dad's gun away. "I've been M this whole time." My dad groaned on the floor. Still alive. "You shot him," I said. "I grazed him," Mark said. "Had to make it look good." He looked at my stomach. "The Cole heir. My ticket to 51% of the company." Adrian's voice from upstairs: "Touch her and you die." Mark laughed. "She's unarmed, nephew. And I'm not." Footsteps. Adrian came down. Hands up. "Let her go," Adrian said. "Or what?" Mark raised his gun. "You'll sign the company over?" I stepped between them. "Stop." Both men froze. "I'm tired of being a pawn," I said. My voice didn't shake. "You want Cole Corp? Take it. I don't want it." Mark frowned. "What?" "I want my family," I said. I took Adrian's hand. "And my baby. That's all." Sirens. Far away. Mark cursed. "The cops." He looked at me. Then at Adrian. "This isn't over," he said. And ran upstairs. Gunshot. Then nothing. Adrian pulled me into him. "Are you okay?" I nodded. Crying. "You came for me." "Always," he said. "Always." Upstairs, police flooded in. It was over. For now.
