The doctor's office was silent.
Adrian held my hand. Too tight.
"Mrs. Cole," the doctor said. "Your test results."
I closed my eyes. This was fake. It had to be fake.
"You're pregnant," she said. "8 weeks."
The world stopped.
"What?" My voice was a whisper.
Adrian didn't let go. "Are you sure?"
"100% sure," the doctor smiled. "Congratulations."
We walked out in silence.
The cameras flashed. We smiled for them.
Inside, I was falling apart.
In the car, Adrian finally spoke.
"It wasn't part of the plan."
"I know," I said. Tears fell. "What do we do?"
He pulled over. Turned to me.
"We do what we said we would," he said. "We raise it. Together."
"Even if--"
"Even if it started as a lie." His thumb wiped my tears. "This is real now. You. Me. This baby."
My phone buzzed. Unknown number.
A sonogram photo. Not mine.

Someone knew.
Someone was watching us.
Adrian saw my face. "What is it?"
I showed him. His face went dark.
"They're threatening our child," he said. Low. Dangerous.
"Then we fight back," I said. And for the first time, I meant it. "As a family."
He pulled me into him. Kissed my forehead.
"Family," he repeated. Like he was testing the word.
"Family."
