The lab was cold. Too cold.
Elena watched us from the corner. Smiling.
"Standard paternity test," the nurse said. "Results in 2 hours."
Adrian squeezed my hand. "Whatever it says," he whispered. "We handle it. Together."
2 hours felt like 2 years.
Elena paced. "If it's not his, Adrian, you lose everything."
"If it is," Adrian said, "you go to jail for blackmail."
The nurse came back. Envelope in hand.
"Mrs. Cole? Mr. Cole?"
My heart stopped.
Adrian took the envelope. Didn't open it. Looked at me first.
"Ready?"
I nodded. Couldn't speak.
He ripped it open.
Read it.
His face gave nothing away.
Elena leaned forward. "Well?"
Adrian looked up. Straight at her.
"Positive," he said. "99.9% match."
Elena's smile dropped. "That... that's impossible."
"Science doesn't lie," Adrian said. He pulled me to him. "Our baby is mine."
Elena threw her folder on the ground. "This isn't over."
"It is," Adrian said. Low. "Security."
Two guards appeared. "Ms. Voss, you're under arrest for extortion and fraud."
As they dragged her away, she screamed, "Your father will kill you both!"
Silence.
Then Adrian turned to me.
His hand went to my stomach.
"We did it," he whispered. "We won."
I burst into tears. Not from fear.
From relief. From hope.
He kissed my forehead. "Let's go home, Wife. And plan a nursery."
For the first time, home didn't sound like a prison.
It sounded like forever.
