"You bought the entire store," I said.
Adrian just shrugged. "They had a sale."
A "sale" that filled 3 trucks.
The penthouse looked like a baby store exploded.
Cribs. Rockers. 47 stuffed animals. All white and gray. Very Adrian.
"Did you... pick all this?" I asked.
He looked almost shy. "I googled 'best nursery 2027'. And then 'how to be a dad'."
My heart melted. "Adrian Cole googling how to be a dad?"
"Don't tell anyone," he muttered. "Has a reputation to keep."
We spent the afternoon assembling furniture.
Me, 8 weeks pregnant, reading instructions.
Him, billionaire CEO, on his knees with a screwdriver.
"Left or right?" he asked, holding two crib panels.
"Left," I said.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
He laughed. Actually laughed. "Guess we'll find out."
By sunset, we had a crib. A rocking chair. And a mountain of boxes.
Adrian pulled me into the rocking chair. His arms around me. My back to his chest.
"Close your eyes," he whispered.
I did.
He rocked us. Slow.
"This," he said. "This is what I want. Every night."
My phone buzzed. Not my father. Not Elena.
A text from an unknown number: `Congratulations on the baby. You have no idea what you started. - M`
Adrian saw it. His jaw tightened.
"Who's M?"
I shook my head. "I don't know."
But my hands were shaking.
The fight wasn't over.
