Chapter 8: Enemy

258 Words
"You're sleeping in the guest room." Adrian didn't look at me as he said it. 365 days contract. Gone. But he still wanted me under his roof. Why? "Fine," I said. "But I didn't do it." He finally turned. "Then help me find who did." So that's what we were now. Partners. Enemies. Something in between. The next 48 hours were hell. Board meetings. Police interviews. Lawyers. And through all of it, his eyes on me. Watching. Waiting for me to slip. Night 2, I couldn't sleep. A noise from his office. 2AM. I found him there. Tie off. Sleeves rolled up. Staring at my father's company file. "You hate me," I whispered. "I should," he said without looking up. "My dad drank himself to death after your dad took everything." My chest hurt. "I'm sorry." "Don't be." He closed the file. "Be useful." He slid a folder to me. Photos. The blonde from the gala. Meeting with my father last month. "She's the leak," he said. "And she's working for him." My father. The man who told me to marry Adrian to destroy him. My hands shook. "I didn't know." Adrian stood. Came around the desk. For a second I thought he'd yell. Hurt me. Instead, he brushed a tear off my cheek with his thumb. "I believe you," he murmured. "That's the problem." His phone buzzed. New text. From my father: `If you don't end this in 24h, the video goes public.` A video. Of me. And what I did the night we signed the contract.
