We didn't talk for 2 days.
Not after London. Not after "the leaker".
Adrian threw himself into work. I threw myself into pretending I was fine.
Until tonight.
Cole Tower Gala. Again.
But this time, he wasn't with me.
"Mr. Cole, is this your new PR director?"
A blonde in a red dress hung on his arm. Smiling. Touching his chest.
My chest hurt.
Contract says we’re strangers in private. This was public.
"She's just a colleague," Adrian said. But his eyes found mine across the room.
Cold. Testing me.
I downed my champagne.
"She's beautiful," I muttered to myself. "You’re just the contract wife."
Then someone bumped into me. Wine spilled all over my white dress.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry!" It was her. The blonde.
She didn't look sorry. She looked smug.
Before I could answer, a black suit appeared behind me.
Adrian.
He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. His scent surrounded me.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Low. Only for me.
"I'm fine," I lied.
His jaw ticked. "The lady didn't mean it. She's clumsy."
The blonde paled. "Mr. Cole, I--"
"Leave." One word. She ran.
He turned back to me. We were alone now, in a corner.
"Jealous?" he whispered.
"No."
"Liar." His thumb brushed my bare shoulder under the jacket.
"You’re my wife. For 365 days. No one touches what's mine."
My heart stopped.
Was that possessiveness... or something real?
Before I could answer, his phone buzzed.
The same unknown number from before.
A text to BOTH our phones: `Stop playing house. The truth comes out tomorrow.`
