As the minutes stretched on, the weight of the moment settled between them, the sound of the engine humming quietly beneath their feet.
Evelyn's heart was a rapid beat in her chest, pulsing louder with every passing second.
She tried to keep her focus on the road, but the words Mackenzie had just said swirled in her mind, rattling her thoughts, making everything feel out of control.
Just take it one step at a time...
It was a simple enough statement, but the way he said it, with that warmth in his voice, made her wonder if he meant something more.
Did he want her to trust him? Did he want to take that step with her—into a world that she wasn't sure she could navigate?
Or was it just another way to keep her hooked, dangling at the edge of something dangerous, but exciting?
"Where do you want to go?" she asked after a while, her voice barely above a whisper. She didn't want to break the fragile thread of calm they had built, but the tension between them was palpable.
She couldn't keep driving in silence, not when everything inside of her was shouting to be heard.
Mackenzie glanced at her, his expression unreadable. For a moment, she thought he might not answer, but then he shrugged, his fingers drumming lightly against the dashboard.
"Wherever you want to go." His voice was steady, but there was an edge to it, a flicker of something darker that she couldn't quite place. "I just wanted to get away from the school. From everything, I guess."
Evelyn nodded, trying to push back the unease that was beginning to creep up her spine.
She didn't want to let herself believe that Mackenzie's invitation was anything more than an attempt to escape his own life, but something in the way he looked at her made her wonder.
There was something raw in his eyes, something unspoken.
He was still the same Mackenzie Brennen she'd always known—the rich, popular guy with the dark past—but today, there was an openness there. A crack in his armor that he wasn't trying to hide.
Before she could respond, she noticed the streets beginning to narrow as they drove away from the busy part of town.
They were heading toward the outskirts of the city now—distant, quieter. Evelyn's grip tightened on the steering wheel, and her foot instinctively slowed until the car came to a complete stop.
"Where should we go, Mackenzie?" she asked again, her voice laced with hesitation this time.
Mackenzie's eyes locked with hers, and for a moment, he didn't speak. There was a charged silence that passed between them, thick with unspoken questions.
Then, he shifted in his seat, leaning closer, his breath warm against the cool air between them.
"I don't know yet," he said softly. "But I'll tell you when we get there, so just keep driving." His voice dropped, becoming almost a whisper. "I don't really care where we go, Evelyn, I just want to be with you."
Her heart skipped a beat at the sincerity in his voice. For a moment, she thought her chest might explode.
She wasn't sure if she should stay parked or start driving again, but something in Mackenzie's tone kept her glued to her seat, unsure of whether she was being led into a good place or a dangerous one.
"You don't have to do this," Evelyn replied, forcing herself to breathe, trying to make sense of her racing emotions. "You don't have to keep doing this for me, Mackenzie. We don't have to keep trying to hang out."
She could feel herself pulling away, even as the words spilled out.
She wasn't sure what she was trying to protect herself from—him, the situation, or the feelings she was starting to acknowledge were beginning to swirl inside her.
He didn't answer right away. Instead, there was only the sound of his breathing and the hum of car's heater as they remained parked along the side of the narrow street.
Then, as though he'd made a decision, Mackenzie shifted once more, moving in closer with such intent that it made Evelyn's breath catch in her throat.
Before she could ask him what he was doing, before she could pull away or stop him, he reached out, cupping her face with his hand, his touch warm against her cool skin.
His thumb brushed lightly over her cheek, sending a jolt through her body.
"Evelyn," he whispered, his voice hushed but steady. "I'm not trying to force anything on you. I'm just... I just want you to know that I'm here. And I want you to be here with me, too." His eyes searched hers with such intensity, Evelyn felt like she could lose herself in them.
And then, without another word, Mackenzie leaned in.
It happened so quickly that Evelyn didn't have time to react.
His lips brushed against hers, gentle but insistent, like he was testing the waters, waiting for her to pull away or give in.
The kiss wasn't demanding or forceful—it was the kind of kiss that felt like a question, one she wasn't ready to answer but couldn't ignore.
Evelyn's world tilted on its axis as his lips molded against hers.
She felt the warmth of him, the certainty in his touch, and for a split second, everything else faded away—the noise in her head, the worries, the doubts, the fears.
There was just Mackenzie, and this moment, and the softness of his lips on hers.
But just as quickly as it had started, the kiss ended. Mackenzie pulled away slightly, his forehead resting gently against hers.
He was breathing heavily, just like she was, both of them caught in the same moment of uncertainty.
"I'm sorry," he murmured, pulling back, though his eyes still held onto hers, dark with emotions he hadn't shared yet. "I shouldn't have done that. I didn't want to make you uncomfortable."
Evelyn's heart was pounding in her chest, and she felt a flush rising to her cheeks.
She wasn't sure what she felt—confused, excited, overwhelmed, or maybe all of it at once.
She didn't know what to do with the rush of emotions swirling inside of her, but she couldn't deny the pull she felt toward him, even though every warning inside of her screamed at her to stop.
"You didn't make me uncomfortable," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I wasn't expecting that."
Mackenzie gave a soft laugh, though it sounded almost nervous. "Yeah, well... neither was I."
Evelyn didn't know how to respond. She wanted to say something, but the words felt too heavy, too tangled up in all the questions she had swirling in her mind.
Instead, she just kept her gaze fixed on him, trying to understand what was happening between them.
After a moment, Mackenzie shifted, his hand still resting on her arm.
"Look, Evelyn. I didn't mean to make things complicated, but I can't help the way I feel. I don't want you to think this is just some... high school fling. I-I care about you, Evelyn."
Her breath hitched in her throat at his words.
They were the kind of words that made her heart race, the kind of words that made her think that maybe, just maybe, he wasn't who everyone else said he was.
Maybe, just maybe, Mackenzie was showing her a side of himself that no one had ever seen.
But even with those words hanging in the air between them, Evelyn couldn't shake the reality of the world he came from—the world of danger, lies, and secrets.
She knew she couldn't get involved in that, but the pull toward him, the way he made her feel, was undeniable.
"I care about you too," Evelyn said, her voice low but honest. "But I don't know what this is. I don't know if I can be part of... all of this." She motioned vaguely, as though trying to encompass the world he was living in, the world she didn't understand.
Mackenzie didn't say anything at first. He just looked at her with that same intensity, as if trying to make her understand something, something that only he knew.
Finally, he spoke again. "I know. And I don't expect you to figure it all out right now. But I just want you to know that I'm here... when you're ready."
Evelyn's heart swelled at his words. She didn't know what the future held, but in that moment, she didn't feel as uncertain as she had before.
Maybe, just maybe, there was hope for them—hope for something more than the mess of their worlds colliding. But the path forward was unclear, and Evelyn knew that every step she took would matter.
For now, all she could do was keep driving, one mile at a time
