Irreversible loss of brain stem function was certain to lead to death, and there were only four sure ways for that to happen—oxygen starvation, extremely high body temperature, chemical toxins, and physical damage. Heaven was certain that Layne had considered all four as he and their family, friends, and allies listened to Delia and Spencer talk about their visit with Dylan. It went just as Heaven had feared.
