Trevor drove along the highway like a man possessed. He held his phone to his ear with his free hand. They whizzed past the trees surrounding Redcliffe, leaving them behind in the darkness. Kira stared numbly out of the passenger window.
How could she not have expected the Procurer to lash out like this? He had warned her, hadn’t he? her stomach was in knots. But somehow, she had never thought that her decision to go to Redcliffe would put Kevin in danger.
I should have known.
The Procurer must suspect she had gone after him. Now he was forcing her hand, and Kevin was paying the price.
Would I have done anything different if I had known it would end like this?
