The Start of it All

Ever think of a time when you thought the word was magical? Well, let me tell you something, the world’s not magical. My life’s a hell show. Parents are divorced, most think, yay two of everything. Nope. It’s more like, this parent against the other, never knowing what’s actually wrong with their kids, always bickering about child support not being paid. It’s an endless cycle of yelling, arguing, and screaming at the kid for no reason. My name’s Raelynn. My life’s about to take an interesting turn. “Raelynn! Get down here. Now!” That's mom. Yelling like always, it’s a never ending cycle for her too. “Rae! Now!” “Coming, ma!” I yelled back to her. This is stressing me out. Being a junior in high school is the worst thing ever. I’m at the bottom of the class. I’m smart, but don’t show it. I get down stairs to my mom yelling at my older brother, he needs to get a life. “Raelynn Marie Hawthorne! What the heck took you so long? Your brother is taking you to school.” I nod okay. My brother, 6’2, is a linebacker for our prestigious private school. Shaggy brown hair, blueish-green eyes, any girl would kill to be with him. I mean that he doesn’t do anything but party and hook up with girls. Mom does everything she can for him, to get him to the best college to play ball. Me, I try everything I can to be helpful. Always getting extra chores to not get in trouble. Always trying my hardest in my classes, being in cheerleading, my 5’7 thick frame doesn't really qualify for cheer, but I’m a great lifter. I have black, almost brown hair, with blue eyes that only change different color blues. When I’m angry, sad or happy. Enough about me, back to the story. “Alright, I’m not going to be home tonight, so fend for yourself for dinner, Kay? Rae? And Skylar, please look out for your sister at school? She needs friends. Now, have a great first day y’all! Love!” With that mom walks out the door and leaves to go to work. Skylar looks at me, “Do not, I repeat, do not follow me around in school. Don’t give a sh*t that you need friends. You ain’t finding them with me. Understood?” I violently shake my head yes. I’d rather be alone than with this dipwad. My brother and I don't like each other. Ever since dad left, he’s been distant and so has mom. We get into his truck and we take off to pick up his girlfriend of the week. Taylor, preppy blonde, 5’4, captain of the cheer team, she’s a pain in my ass. We get to her house and Skylar kicks me out of the car as Taylor skips down her driveway. “I don’t understand why she has to go with us if she has a car? It’s not fair.” “Stop whining Rae. And you’re not coming with us either. You’re walking. See you at home brat!” He says this as he’s racing off. Great. Walking to school it is. I start walking down the sidewalk and I hear a car pulling up beside me. I get self conscious because of the stupid school skirt they make all girls wear. I start to pull the skirt down, the car pulls up next to me, rolls the window down, “Can I help you?” I ask him. “No, but you can tell me where St. Francis Prep is.” “Funny, I’m heading that way now. Are you a student?” I keep walking though. This dude gives me the creeps. But, there’s a calming aura around him. Can’t explain it, but he seems like he won’t hurt me. “Yeah, senior year starts today. Wait, you’re Sky’s little sister, aren’t you?” Got me. “Yeah. Sadly, he’s my older brother.” How does he know that? I’ve never seen him before, he’s never stepped foot in the school, I know because I work in the front office during homeroom and 1st block. This is weird. “Well, I’ll see you at school. Name’s Raelynn.” He looks at me, and I swear I hear him whisper, I found her, mate. Say what?
